I think you two are right. I'd seen laser cut wooden bookmarks with the browning on the cut edges, but this place will cut up books for you with their laser cutter. Pretty cool, actually. The edges of their work isn't browned either.

I'm guessing the old fashioned way that spies did it... a template and razor blade.
