Today I learned about Crimean Tom, also known as Sevastopol Tom.

There are some wonderful stories of soldiers adopting pets - I remember one from the Peninsula War where a soldier found a cockerel wandering about the hills - you'd think, given that they were struggling for food that they'd have eaten the bird, but no - he kept it with him and he and his comrades would give him little bits of their bread or grain.

In the midst of all that carnage and cruelty these hardened men took comfort from a pet. Kind of beautiful.

Or pets adopting soldiers...

But that kitteh in the middle is juuuuust right.
