What a great shot of the two of you! Honest to God, you still seem to be aging backwards, Cherry.

Lovely plumage, Sundae!

So lovely to see a happy Sundae, and a great pic with Classy Carruthers, there, too! X

Hey Carruthers, has anyone ever told you that you look like the guy that played the father in the TV show Alf? From the 80's I think it was.

I had to admit I needed help with seeing little words, and also fine detail on cakes so went and got myself some reading glasses. The lady tried to sell me some fancy $400 package with designer frames. I mentioned that I didn't think anyone would care what my glasses look like and how bout showing me the cheapest set they had. This was them. $39 all up!

No glasses could detract from your radiance.
$39? Was that from an eye testing place like an optician's office? The last time I went it was over $800 for glasses and sunglasses, but I also have a couple of pair of $5 "reading" glasses from the drug store. They work for specific tasks like on my computer where bifocals are a pain. |
I, too, need reading glasses. I paid five bucks for basic glasses, ugly as original sin. I don't let anyone see them tho. :)
|
In Australia, you can go to an optometrist and get your eyes checked 'for free' every two years under our public health system. The prescription is free also. All you pay for is the frames which were $39.
When I say free, it's not an out of pocket expense for the consultation etc, but it is built into our tax system. Kids also get up to $1000 of 'free' dental work too. Each year. Each child. |
Ali - I like the naughty librarian look. Your highlights are quite flattering
|
The last time I got new glasses (4 years ago), the office wanted $600.00 just for the progressive lenses. Checked out Costco Optical - $220.00 for frames and lenses. Just ordered new glasses last night - $365.00 for a pair of progressive lenses and frames, and a pair of single vision lenses and frames (for the computer, I was doing the "bobble head" trying to focus on the screen with the progressives.
Apparently, none of their frames are over $100.00. Mine were $59.95 each. |
If you're really cost-conscious, you can get perfectly good and fashionable glasses online for $20-$40 total. But I have a messed up face that is not of normal proportions, and also I have huge psychological hang ups connecting glasses to all my childhood bullying experiences... Long story short, I pay a lot for custom frames that actually fit my face, and then I keep them for a decade.
|
My last 3-4 pair of glasses have all been in the $19-$35 range from eyebuydirect. I once tried a pair of progressives from them, and didn't like them. They may have fucked up the installation of the lenses so they didn't line up correctly with one another. Whatever it was, I hated them. So now I just wear bifocals because they can't fuck that up with the obvious divider line on each lens. Anyway, I'm happy with them and won't go back to paying hundreds in a brick and mortar store. But if you want to do that, I'll still like you.
|
I hated the progressives because if I was working on something more than a foot wide I had to keep swiveling my head from side to side.
|
Yeah, my arms are getting shorter as I get older, too, I can't get the book far enough away to read it sometimes. I have two pair of cheapie reading glasses. One pair is stronger, for really close work.
|
I bought one of those high powered magnification visors, just, you know, for doing really delicate stuff. And now find myself grabbing them more and more often. It's amazing to be able to see stuff up close in beautiful detail.
|
I used to have one of those 6" round magnifying glass surrounded by a round fluorescent lamp on a double arm like a desk lamp, clamped to my desk. For some reason when I didn't need it for what I used it for, I put it away somewhere. Probably should dig it out as there's many more things it would be handy for now.

OK...I own glasses. Two pair, even. Here's a picture of me not wearing any on Tuesday after feeling the Mo Primary Bern. |

Had a few hours in Glatt-land yesterday. J's daughter got engaged there Sat night and there was a brief celebration. We had the morning so we went to the Smithsonian Am. History museum and saw a few cool things. Quickie review: it didn't disappoint, but I actually thought there would be a lot more "stuff". |
There has been a trend over the last decade or two to put the "stuff" in storage and have more hands-on exhibits with buttons and such to push for the children. This is in pretty much all the Smithsonian museums on the Mall. Not the art museums though.
I was sad when they got rid of the Arts and Industries museum entirely and replaced it with some Discovery something or other museum that had zero stuff and just buttons to push. They used to have a human powered cast iron table saw in that old museum. A big flywheel and cranks on either side. Huge steam engines. That kind of stuff. |
I guess the whippersnappers don't appreciate the dusty old mechanical things, when compared to electronical, interactical, lights flashing, bells ringing, whiz bang displays. Of course it may also be the result of the maturbatical delusions of display designers.
|
Yeah, when I was a kid we had to be interactive with our minds.
I heard or read somewhere a comment by a kid saying that the best pictures are on the radio. |
You look good, Tony. You look happy!

Went to a wedding last night. They had a photo booth thing set up in the front of the reception room and a big book with black pages, some 2 sided scotch tape and gold/silver markers. You went into the booth with your friends, the attendant took 4 shots in 10 second intervals, ready or not, and they hand you 2 copies. One for the book, one to keep.
I thought it was a great idea. |
