What, we're not doing the branding with hot coals thing anymore?

I always liked that part...

I felt bad, until I read the beginning of her post.

Hau ab, Schlampe. I hope you really are done reading here. Tell antibland I said, and sincerely meant, "good luck gettng it up and running". I hope he does well for himself. Perhaps getting rid of you would be a good start.

I am in the infantcy of my Online community postings, and i'd like to thank the Celler.org(tm) for wraping me in their warm bosom.

Yes, just like you're actually interested in swaying opinion. Perhaps you've never heard of "diplomacy". Regardless, that opener of yours sure was a miserable failure at it.

antibland would have had a much better reception if he would have said something like this:

Hi. I'm new here, but I've seen some of the Photoshop creations around here and they're pretty decent.

I'm working on a new design site with the goal of bringing talented people together. I don't have much to offer, but I'm offering $50 in a sort of logo contest for the site. [ Insert criteria here. ]

I hope this isn't viewed as a spam - I don't mean it to be. I just thought some people around here might be interested. If not, that's okay too. Keep up the good Photoshop work!

There would have still been a heckler or two, and he could have quelled their flames with something like this:

Look, I really don't mean to be spamming. I'm just a single person and I don't have much money to offer, but I thought a $50 prize might be a nice bonus to someone that has talent but isn't professionally employed doing Graphic Design. Obviously $50 doesn't begin to cover the fee of a professional graphic designer, but that's not what I'm looking for - more like a college student that just likes doing that sort of thing.

I really didn't mean to offend, though, and if I did, I'm sorry. I thought it would be appropriate to post here, and I meant no ill will.

I doubt anyone would have continued after that.

Regardless, it doesn't really matter - he got a decent logo and looked, to quite a few Cellar residents, like a spammer-type in the process. If he isn't, great! But he didn't really do anything to quell the accusations.

You, on the other hand... are you really interested in discussion? Or did you just want to go around slinging names?

If you want to convince someone, here's a tip: implying that someone is the "Cellar slut" probably will not enlist them to your side, nor make them sympathetic to your position. Just a thought.

Ike_is_my_Cat 03-28-2003 02:53 PM

unless they are a slut, in which case you owe them back-pay for their time with any accrued interest.

Elspode 03-28-2003 03:36 PM

If no one else volunteers to be the Cellar Slut, I'll take the job. After all, I have no other useful skills to offer.

antibitch 03-28-2003 04:00 PM

insights and possibilities:

But the thing is, Antibland would have been happy to compose a request that was more informal. He is, and is pretty much planning to be in the future, as far as I know, a nice guy. If he had known that was the proper way to go about it and that composing a note like that would have gotten him a more prosperous response, he wouldn't have hesitated to go that way. Most of the suggestion you composed, in fact, would have been exactly what he would have written. He did not come to this site with the intention of looking superficial.

Because of the fact that he was zooming about the web at the speed that he was, however, planting his contest notice as many places as possible, he simply didn't take the time to re-write it just for cellar.org, nor did it dawn on him that it would be recieved offensively, either because it was looked at as spam or because the amount was laughable. I can't say that I blame him, either, for not getting to know the inner workings of each forum he went to. It would have been better, of course, but I'm sure it never entered his handsome little head that the way he did it would have elicited such grief (or entertainment, in many cases). It just....happened as it happened. So you don't have to crucify him for not caring...he would have if he had known.

[By the way, I would also like to state for the record that he is horrified I've even posted to this site regarding him, and has requested repeatedly that I stop since I'm making him look like a pussy (which I suppose I am) in the process. I'M the one who felt compelled to open my big mouth.]

Love, antibitch

PS: To those I've dubbed "Cellar Slut": I didn't really mean it, of course. I'm not one of those chicks who goes around calling girls silly names. I just couldn't resist the consonance, plus it was getting late. :3eye:

You *could* be good here AB. Not as good as Ep (aka Elspode) , not right away anyway, but definite potential........should you choose to exploit it.

(slang loses focus after about 100 words, so he didnt read your previous long post. He apologizes if *it* was funny too and yet not referenced as such)

So out of curiosity what happened at all the other places Antibland posted his contest? Did it get the same treatment?
Since my memory is terrible, where are the graphic changes? Is it me or is it somewhat the same I cannot remember...

Woo hoo! At last, a job with a title!

Is there a certificate that goes along with this? Some people want proof before putting out, and I'd hate to have to disappoint the ladies. I'd keep it in my wallet, right next to a fresh rubber and my HIV-Free testimonial letter from my doctor.

So, basically, he was posting a commercial message on a messageboard without first getting involved with the community.

In other words, spamming.

And as has been demonstrated, that sort of thing doesn't fly too far around here.

No one doubts he's a good guy. But I think it should be fairly obvious why this whole thing happened.

Honestly, I hope he drags his ass back here, gets involved debating and discussing and proves me wrong. Why? Because I'd rather have someone who actually cares about the community than be right about someone's intentions.

You're welcome to stay, too. That's what the man says, and I tend to agree with him. I'd still say, however, that if you're looking to get flamed off the boards and turn overall opinion against you, your first post was a great start.

Here's something I wrote a while back to someone else, and I think it applies here, so I'm posting it.

Quote:

Since you didn't get a welcome post, here it is.

I'm the resident asshole. The older I become, the more I hate people as a whole. I'm pretty quick to tell your that your ideas are ridiculous and even quicker to write you off as someone whom I don't need to pay attention to. I'm basically married, which means I don't feel like I need to be nice to females - so I'm not. You'll get no special treatment from me because I don't care. Since you seem to be more of the liberal bent (judging from your profile and your few posts), we will probably agree on many things but disagree on even more. And I probably won't keep it a secret.

That having been said, I'm glad you're here. The Cellar, to me, is a community. It works very well, and I hope it works well for you. I've been posting regularly here for nearly two years and it's been a good time. It can be pretty much anything to you that you want it to. You decide your level of involvement. I hope that it's as fulfilling for you as it has been for me; that you find friends here and that your enemies aren't too evil; that, at the end of your stay, be it a week or ten years, you say "I'm glad I did that."

Don't be discouraged too quickly and I believe you'll find it's worth it.

I'm glad to have you. Welcome to the Cellar.

xoxoxoBruce 04-04-2003 05:29 PM

As you all know, I'm a new to the cellar. Lurked for a while and threw in my 2 cents (or less) once in a while. Following through this thread has been an education to say the least. It reminds me of watching a drunk at a party going through the mood swings. Jovial, wild, sloppy, contrite, brazen, defensive, etc. etc. Now THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!!!

Leus 04-23-2003 07:18 PM

I've been staring at this damned edit box for at least twenty minutes, and I swear, I've thought about 10 sarcastic, smart-assed responses... sadly, I can't find the right words for saving my life. And I was pride of my self-taught english.

Aw, crap. Welcome to the Cellar.

The googlebots haven't indexed us in a while... although they have a cached version of the front page from two days ago. I wonder if they have a plan to only index bulletin-type sites every once in a while, or to skip 'em completely. That would be a shame.

Meanwhile it would appear that someone else was cheesed at webscalpel, because another of Google's entries is from a diary site where the guy is right in league with us. Check out the Mon. Mar 3 entry at this link (scroll down, it's near the end):

The clocks shifted again. I'm sure I've ranted about how much I dislike daylight savings time (well, not the time under the switch, but the fact that there is one), so I won't repeat myself. Still, I'm left much more sleepy than I should be, and I actually should be at work right now. Gah!

I lifted that from his site. At least someone else on the planet thinks time changes are idiotic. :)

Yeah, the webscalpel people put up a lot of
posters and stuff around here. It actually was kind of
irritating that they were just littering so much and making
the neighborhood look trashy :)
Apparently, they must live near me (and CMU)...
Anyhow, this looks like a pretty neat site, so my thanks to
