I think the flags in my signature are very subtle and I see nothing wrong with them. I can't believe there is so much fuss over a few little flags. I even got a PM about them. Well, they're staying now for sure.

monster 10-17-2011 01:14 PM

Honey you give yourself too much credit. I too was referring to Jim's weekend display. Which amused me. World cup flags would also amuse me.

Too much credit. That's funny! Jim's display was actually in my defense, honey.

I agree. It is always possible to turn off avatars in your control panel.

jimhelm 10-17-2011 02:20 PM

AND signatures, too.

infinite monkey 10-17-2011 02:22 PM

Sweet, hadn't thought of that:

From control panel:

Quote:

You can show or hide various elements of messages, which may be good for users on slow internet connections, or who want to remove extraneous clutter from posts. We recommend you leave these settings where they are. The Cellar doesn't use Avatars anyway (we feel they make any forum look like crap).

Show Signatures
Show Avatars
Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)

Happy Monkey 10-17-2011 03:50 PM

Avatars. Alas, I was evil and hotlinked my horrific animated rooster picture, and it's no longer there...

So what? Your flags are nothing to me. I hadn't even noticed them. Why are you making such a freaking song and dance about it?

I'm not.

DanaC 10-17-2011 05:30 PM

Holy fuck. Holy fucking fuck.

I had no clue. Not even the slightest suspicion.

Nice to know what became of Marichiko after all. I always wondered.

For the record, I liked Mari. Tried the email address I had when she'd gone.

*smiles*

Nice goin Sam. So happy my friend didn't vanish off into some awful hell never to return.

DanaC 10-17-2011 05:40 PM

Can't wait til the next time J asks me if there's anything goin on in the Cellar :p

I'll be all, like ' D'ye remember that Marichiko chick ....'

:p

I have been to other forums that use avatars and have found them to be annoying.
I for one will vote no avatars. I think that our signatures and profile pictures are enough. Go to my profile and see a very annoying avatar.

Undertoad 10-17-2011 06:37 PM

fwiw this forum software does not currently have support for banning of gifs or griffs.

DanaC 10-17-2011 06:39 PM

Howabout glyphs?

jimhelm 10-17-2011 06:45 PM

or spliffs?

Aliantha 10-17-2011 06:56 PM

I'm starting to think BD is someone's sock puppet. Or at least, someone we've met here before maybe? Does anyone else get that feeling?

Gosh this is so confusing.

I vote no to avatars. I don't think they help to recognise anyone. I'd only plop a pic of my head up if they were compulsory, and I really don't see that happening. I'd choose the no avatar format if both options were available.

Question for UT. If we had the avatar option, would that mean it'd cost more to run the cellar?

btw, I wonder if BD has discovered the tip jar yet.

No, I'm no one's sock puppet nor have I ever been here before. However, I do have to say that this is one of the most unwelcoming forums I have ever been on. No one has made me feel welcome with the exception of one or two members. Then I get a PM from someone here asking me to remove the flags in my signature because they are too distracting. Now I'm called someone's sock puppet or saying that I am a previous member that has been banned or left or whatever. I'm above games like that. I looked to see how many new members have recently joined here and there were quite a few, but only one in the past few months decided to stick around. Now I can see why.

Undertoad...please delete the pics I have posted in the 80's hair thread, the RFN thread and the pet thread. I have no desire to post here anymore.

Aliantha 10-17-2011 07:12 PM

I'm sorry. It's just that you really remind me of someone else, but I just can't put my finger on who. Maybe it's because you are as you say, totally new to this forum. :)

Don't leave because of a few questions. That's just people trying to get to know you. ;)

I thought it seemed that plenty of people welcomed you in your intro thread. We've had the discussion about avatars around here lots of times before and it's always ended up not going ahead because it just would seem out of place or something like that here. Do a search on the avatar word and you'll find them. Most people just don't agree that they're necessary that's all. It's the same deal with the signatures. most people just keep them small.

At the cellar, we care what's on the inside of your post, not all the pretty frills on the outside. ;)

DanaC 10-17-2011 07:13 PM

Wait, what? I've seen people be welcoming towards you. I'd like to think I was one of them.

HungLikeJesus 10-17-2011 07:17 PM

I'd like to think so too, Dana.

BrilliantDisguise 10-17-2011 07:28 PM

I said there were one or two members that did make me feel welcome. And my intro thread had promise which made me come back, however not all in that thread were welcoming. Also, I sent some friendly visitor messages but no one had the decency to reply to any them. It seems you all like your tightly knit community and newcomers are not considered anything until they somehow prove themselves. I don't work that way.

Aliantha 10-17-2011 07:34 PM

That's a bit dramatic don't you think?

BTW, where's my visitor message? how come only some people got them and not all? That's not very nice is it?

monster 10-17-2011 10:22 PM

No-one looks at visitor messages. If you actually took the advice on joining this forum -sit down, look around, get the feel of the place brfore jumping in with both feet, that might have registered. We don't do "Bells and Whistles" ANY of them -even if they are technically available. You weren't welcomed? Bullshit. You weren't fawned over, true. You wanna fit in, quit whining and attention whoring and post stuff with body. Sure, we all post frivolous shit, but that isn't what we're all about. If you missed that, you didn't look hard enough. Leaving? Don't let the door hit you in the ass because this cellar door is tornado-proof and packs a mighty buttfuck in the mouth.

Maybe you should spread your fucked up wings and look around the internet a little and you'll see this isn't how people are treated on forums that want decent members.

No it's not. Try again. Like I said, I'm above having to hide behind a fake user name so I can come back as someone else like so many here seem to do. What's with all the changing of the usernames anyway? That's frowned upon on other quality sites.

monster 10-17-2011 10:41 PM

bye! :D

wait, weren't you leaving?

Aliantha 10-17-2011 10:42 PM

When new comers arrive here, I sometimes think they just don't realize how long some people have been posting and sharing personal stuff with this community, and it's hard for some people to understand that and realize the support people show for one another even through or despite differences in political or even moral beliefs is real.

Maybe if more new comers had the chance to see this they'd stay longer themselves. I do remember when I first came here I felt like I was on the outter for a long time, but I don't feel that way anymore, even though there are some here that I don't get along with so well. And it's not like I don't care about even those people. I wish the best for all the people I've come to know over the years i've been here.

It takes time to get to know people, and you can't expect to just be treated like one of the family if the family doesn't know how to treat you.

"Fawning over" isn't necessary. But being nice to newbs and making them feel welcome should be on a forum that cares about new members. I've made posts that were completely ignored. My breast cancer walk thread was changed into the 'what should monster wear thread'.

skysidhe 10-17-2011 10:46 PM

geez, The following is a post, I tried to post a few back...but now just feels silly.

Hello Brilliant Disguise. I am sorry I didn't say hello. Don't take it personally. We are kind of marginal around here sometimes. :)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Monster isn't marginal. Hence the name.

monster 10-17-2011 10:48 PM

Jealous of what, exactly? The stuck in the 80s thing?

oh and thread-drift... that's what the cellar is all about. Did you miss the memo?

Suggest you go back to those awesome forums...

I don't have a problem with you at all. Now monster on the other hand is just a big bitch.

Aliantha 10-17-2011 10:51 PM

BD, this forum has minimal moderation, therefor, thread drift is inevitable.

We've all been touched by cancer, and I'm sure everyone feels very supportive of your efforts with your walk.

Monster is a pain in the arse. You'll just have to get used to her or find a way to deal with her if you stick around, cause she doesn't seem to be going anywhere. That's one tip I can give you, and believe me, monster and I have had our differences. lol She's not that bad really though.

BrilliantDisguise 10-17-2011 10:53 PM

I know all about thread drift. As I've said I'm not new to forums at all. I think most thread drifts can turn out to be very funny and normally I welcome them.

monster 10-17-2011 10:54 PM

Well then why are you upset about it then. I don't understand. Is it just that you feel very strongly about that particular thread? Were you looking for a response that didn't happen?

If so, you could just say that in the thread.

Don't get all upset about a few bitchy remarks. Believe me, it's not worth the agro.

Just interact how you like. Maybe post on some of the other threads? I haven't really paid much attention to where you're posting in particular, but you seem to be getting about the same sorts of responses as everyone else.

We're a bit communist here. Everyone is subject to the same bitchery regardless of how long they've been here for, so maybe you should just consider yourself lucky. lol That's better than special anyway isn't it? ;)

skysidhe 10-17-2011 10:59 PM

I'd like to confess my stinky tennis shoes now.

This is why I hate tennis shoes. They are hot sweaty and after a while they just plain stink.

I need some Mercy Crocs.

Yeah you piss me off sometimes, but it's not that I don't like you. I recognise the nice things you do and your good qualities, I have a lot of trouble understanding your sense of humour and I do think you're very abrasive. People say the same about me though, so I'm trying to work around it rather than running into a brick wall with my hard head any longer.

There you go UT. There's another confession, just to get the thread back on track.

I guess that's what I like about the cellar. no one is really one dimensional if you hang around long enough to get to know them.

Aliantha 10-17-2011 11:06 PM

You seem cheery tonight UT. Or maybe it's unusually entertaining. I don't usually see you being this light hearted. Having a good day?
