NAME THE KID "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN"

ETA: That becomes a shade NSFW toward the end

Radar 11-23-2009 10:31 PM

My cousin just named their newborn son DeeJay Bryne...not Brian, or Bryan....Bryne. I tried to explain to them that it sounds like Brine but they are 20 years old and they know everything.

I told them, "Hey, he's your kid. Name him what you want, but he may hate you for it later. And if he comes home with bloody nose or a busted lip because he got into a fight over his name, remember....it's YOUR fault. You did this to him."

The kid may go by DB like DB Cooper.

Cloud 11-23-2009 10:37 PM

I hate DeeJay more; everyone has weird middle names. DeeJay isn't a name; it's an occupation.

Still waiting to hear on the two new ones. I think BD#1 is holding out for Orion. BD#2 has no clue and doesn't know if she's having a B or G. They like "Revel" or maybe something with "Lux" in the middle name. Oy.

monster 11-23-2009 11:17 PM

My kids love their unusual names. Maybe Radar's cousin won't be stupid enough to send DeeJay to a school where the kids are stupid enough to beat up kids with unusual names.

A kid just got kicked at my kids' school. It is a big deal and resulted on suspensions, first time ever. Kid's name was Cody. Maybe it was too normal? When kids are bullied "because of their names", it's just an excuse for people who don't want to admit other prejudices or other character problems that upset them.

Let's see:

Star Quarterback named Shirley
Math Club President and Valedictorian called Brad.

you choose....

Radar, you're shallow.

ZenGum 11-23-2009 11:18 PM

Emma ... yes, a BABY name alright. :D

IRL I have known three Emmas. One fairly nice, one dumb as a box of hammers, one nymphomaniac slut with an alcohol problem. Good thing I don't believe names affect personality, eh?

Clodfobble 11-23-2009 11:32 PM

Please, for the love of all that is holy, don't ever give your children names that are in the top ten for popularity (e.g., Emma.) Personally, I'd say nothing in the top 100.

Seriously, it is a pain in the fucking ass to have a too-common name.

monster 11-23-2009 11:32 PM

It's past Emma's bedtime.

Clodfobble is wise as ever. She is also unlucky that she was born in th US -her name was more unusual in the UK.

Clodfobble 11-23-2009 11:36 PM

There was one memorable visit to the obstetrician (where the effect is exacerbated since all the patients are female and within a reasonable age bracket) where of the eight people in the waiting room, five of us had the same name. It's just stupid.

monster 11-23-2009 11:45 PM

Say clod, did you ever find that people assumed you were stupid because you had a common neme? My sister did, and she was far from stupid, but somehow people seemed to expect rocks for brain

Clodfobble 11-24-2009 05:21 PM

That's an interesting question... I can't think of any instances for sure--in the times when I was faced with someone who was assuming I was stupid, I always figured it was because I was young and/or a girl. There's a reason I chose an androgynous handle when I joined here, and didn't put my birth year in my profile for a long time. :)

monster 11-24-2009 06:10 PM

well she was also blonde....

...but stupid people in sit-coms etc are never the ones with the exotic names...... (says the woman who doesn't watch tv)

Would you name a child after a literary character? I did. Ripley is named after Lt. Ellen Ripley from Alien.

xoxoxoBruce 08-15-2014 08:19 PM

You mean it wasn't because jinx said, Believe It Or Not. ;) Well it doesn't seem to have harmed her any, she turned out fine.

infinite monkey 08-15-2014 09:02 PM

I wouldn't name a dog after anyone from Hunger Thrones and Games...but Ripley is a way cool name and she should be proud of it!

Clodfobble 08-16-2014 09:24 AM

I just saw a thing that said since Breaking Bad came out, the popularity of the name Walter in the UK has quadrupled.

We never did that stuff...

DanaC 08-16-2014 10:05 AM

Hah! That's hilarious.

Names from films and tv are fine - as long as they don't sound stoopid.

Most of those new popular names sound fine ... Khaleesi though...

Clodfobble 08-16-2014 11:11 AM

In the TV show Wilfred, there's a vacuous, passive-aggressive character who has named her son "Joffrey," clueless to the cultural baggage the name now carries. It's pretty funny.

Aliantha 08-17-2014 12:51 AM

Maverick is named after the most famous Maverick of all (in modern terms anyway). He loves it. Watches the movie every now and then to make himself feel like a hero. hahaha

Gravdigr 08-17-2014 11:37 AM

Know a guy who named his son Draven, after the character from "The Crow".

monster 08-18-2014 10:11 PM

our Hector was named after the Greek hero. Thor and Hebe were named after the god/goddess. but everyone* assumes Thor is named after the Marvel character -does that count?

*dumb enough to comment before thinking it through

Aliantha 08-18-2014 10:17 PM

Isnt the marvel cheracter based on the myth anyway?

monster 08-18-2014 10:34 PM

yup.

ah well.

Came across my first baby/toddler Beyonce tody. Guess it had to happen

infinite monkey 08-19-2014 07:22 AM

I remember a very short-lived sitcom some years back. There was a stereotypical barbie doll blonde woman with a baby girl (as Caucasian as the mom) she named Oprah.

That's all I remember about it. It didn't last long.

Gravdigr 08-19-2014 01:36 PM

Wiki quote:

Quote:

Winfrey was named "Orpah" after the biblical character in the Book of Ruth on her birth certificate, but people mispronounced it regularly and Oprah stuck.

Big Sarge 08-19-2014 06:32 PM

My son went to school with a girl named Formica. We are big on family names and tradition. Since before the Napoleonic Wars, the oldest male of each generation is named Louis.

I have to admit I have always wanted to name a daughter Anastasia. I have loved that name since I studied Russian.

monster 08-19-2014 07:51 PM

I kinda liked Lysander after a Jilly Cooper character, but it seemed mean...

Ripley is an awesome name btw. Jim, did you see that article about terrible names of 2013 and kids name Cheese? Two of the allegedly worst names were Rocket and Ripley -both for boys. I know a girl called Rocket irl and she is also awesome. And feisty ;)

(still can't get with calling your kid Cheese, though. Bacon, I could understand ;) )

Clodfobble 08-19-2014 09:05 PM

I knew a guy with a dog named Cheese. It's an awesome dog name, but for a kid not so much. I don't know why they'd say Ripley is a bad name for a boy, though. Nouns-as-names are always going to be worse than last-names-as-names.

monster 08-19-2014 10:16 PM

article http://www.thedatereport.com/dating/...wi-and-tintin/

monster 08-19-2014 10:19 PM

I do question the judgement, though, and am not holding up as something I agree with, I just noticed Ripley and rocket on there. probably because they are next to each other, are names of kids I "know", and are the other gender from the kids I know. I think they're great names :D

lumberjim 08-19-2014 10:30 PM

Ripley is definitely feminine. She's proud of her name. Her friends are all jealous. Her 5 friends named Hannah. Small exaggeration.

Just in case she hated it, though, we gave her Jane in the middle.

She's always gonna be Ippy to me though.

monster 08-20-2014 07:02 AM

I meant the judgment of the people deciding which were "odd" names, sorry if that wasn't clear!

glatt 08-20-2014 08:16 AM

Names are funny. You try to go for what you think is an uncommon but still traditional name, like Isabel, and it later turns out there are two of them in the same class with your kid. And then you figure what the hell, and name you son Adam, figuring it's still a good name, even if it's popular, and he winds up being the only kid in the county school system with that name. [/only a slight exaggeration]

You can't worry too much about what other people are doing when you are coming up with names. ymmv

lumberjim 08-20-2014 11:00 AM

Yah. We were not going for unique ness... Just a strong name that also sounds pretty. As though naming her after a survivor of a nightmarish sci-fi catastrophy had any bearing on who she will become in life...

But, I really think that if you name your daughter Raven or Cinnamon.... She's going to be a stripper.

fargon 08-20-2014 06:15 PM

I was named after Colonel Terry Lee, of the Terry and the Pirates comic strip.

Gravdigr 08-21-2014 11:33 PM

One of the UnclesDigr, and myself (my middle name, uncle's first) were named after the same doctor that Grandmadigr lived beside when Momdigr was a little girl.

ETA: Popdigr and I share first names, also.

lumberjim 08-22-2014 09:35 AM

Do we know your first name? We could have fun guessing if we don't

infinite monkey 08-22-2014 10:28 AM

I think it's Luciano. Luciano Giovanni Diggaro.

Gravdigr 08-22-2014 01:12 PM

My name is Inigo Montoya...

I'll take Luciano. Beats the real thing.

lumberjim 08-23-2014 07:36 AM

Albert?

monster 08-23-2014 07:49 AM

From the UK I viewed the USA as modern and progressive so when I got here one of the shocks were how many "old-fashioned" practices there were in every day life. naming your oldest son after his father was one.

I was not named after an actress -allegedly- but everyone thought I was because the name was fairly unusual at the time except for this actress.

Grav: Philip or Rumplestiltskin

No winnahs. However, 'Philip' I use occasionally (kinda). Remember when you used to have give your life story to download that trendy piece of free software? I used fake names and addresses for all those. 'Phil Magroin' was one of them. 'Phil McCracken' was another.

Rumpelstiltskin? Too grimm.

:D
