Yessiree, Bruce is right! This is some form of sausage, looking something like a salami. The following picture shows the whole thing, with the original close-up located towards the lower-left.

ok i'll bite - a split piece of wood
|
Yep, looks like planks to me.
|
I'm sure the little black tape marks are supposed to mean something... but who the hell knows what.
|
I've got it! It's some pieces of wood!
Whatta ya want, "the wood I had around behind my shed that had spiders under it and then I built a treehouse out of it" ??? It's some wood you had bundled up with your steel strapping machine, and then you unstrapped it and took a picture of it? |

I agree with Clodfobble. I think the tape should be the focus, and the 2x8 boards are distracting us.
Is it a layout for rafters? |
Yeah, the marks have been irking me, too. It seems obvious enough they must be some sort of guide, but I can't really tell if they match the taper in the pieces of wood. That is the other thing to me; the second and third shots show splitting the boards into wedge shapes which form the arc visible in the first photo.
Well, BigV, are you making a really, really BigFan? |
He's building the boat that we will take to Ram Island!
|
A boat? Great!
Wait, uh, do we call him BigN(oah) now? |

At first I thought you were finally getting around to showing how you built your kayak, and this was just before ripping strips to form the hull & deck, but you wouldn't be doing big long taper cuts like that. So I have no idea.
Are you making a big circular picnic table? |

And is it an Ark or an arc? With the exception of the split board, I think that they are all straight 2x8 or 2x10s. |
Hmmm, I just don't know about this one. However, I do have a mental image of BigV wringing his hands while chuckling evilly as we all go nuts trying to figure it out.

Recycling wood flooring?

That is exactly the right answer! Congratulations! I have a triangular rim joist and some joists parallel to base of the triangle. The trunk of the tree extends through the rim joists at the apex of the triangle, and these boards, they are tapered, carefully tapered, cover the trapezoid that represents the "lower" 3/4 of the triangle. They are the deck, the floor of the treehouse. The black marks on the patio are pieces of tape that I used to approximate the locations of the supporting members. It made laying out and cutting the deck boards much easier. I was standing on the ground, not on a ladder or in the air, you understand. By the way, there are not enough of them to finish the deck in these pictures. That's why you can see the lighter boards (2x4x8s) at the right. They're just there to fill things in visually for me. A placeholder for me to imagine how much more lumber I'll need to complete the deck. Things are kind of on hold right now, but the next chance I have at a picture, I'll show you the details. The treehouse will likely be a whole thread, like the roof project. Good call Flint! |

Which makes this one, also interesting, not very mysterious. What is this?
|
I was going to say Ponderosa Pine, but the bark looks too thin, and I can't smell any vanilla.
|
Good close guess... you may be right. Two needles per bundle, semi circular in cross section so when pressed lightly together the show a round bundle, puzzle piece bark, very fast growing. There's a lovely Western Hemlock next door, and an amazing Western Red Cedar across the alley. It's a very green neighborhood.

I was technically correct, even though Flint, & Elspode beat me to it! |

That's the tree you're killing, in the course of building that platform, to see over the fence when the chick next door is sunbathing,

Definately a saw blade. The picture looks a bit distorted which makes it appear convex. The tips are typical of that seen on a diamond tipped blade used for stone. May be from a rock quary because it looks huge.
|
Not stone, a sawmill. That dark staining, that's been mostly buffed off when it was reconditioned (teeth replaced), is from wood sap.
|
Thanks razz!
Hey, don't you hate it when someone uses one of your jokes for their own purposes and gives no credit? [/snide remark] |

Yes, it's a blade from a sawmill. xoBruce wins it. Here's one with my foot for perspective:

Well hell, that's not actual size either, HLJ. Is your eye calibrated? Are you using "man-inches?"
