Yessiree, Bruce is right! This is some form of sausage, looking something like a salami. The following picture shows the whole thing, with the original close-up located towards the lower-left.

ok i'll bite - a split piece of wood

Shawnee123 08-02-2007 10:41 AM

Yep, looks like planks to me.

Clodfobble 08-02-2007 11:06 AM

I'm sure the little black tape marks are supposed to mean something... but who the hell knows what.

Flint 08-02-2007 11:08 AM

I've got it! It's some pieces of wood!

Whatta ya want, "the wood I had around behind my shed that had spiders under it and then I built a treehouse out of it" ???

It's some wood you had bundled up with your steel strapping machine, and then you unstrapped it and took a picture of it?

Ahhh, it's a map to the solution. A la The DaVinci Code.

HungLikeJesus 08-02-2007 11:24 AM

I agree with Clodfobble. I think the tape should be the focus, and the 2x8 boards are distracting us.

Is it a layout for rafters?

Uisge Beatha 08-02-2007 11:32 AM

Yeah, the marks have been irking me, too. It seems obvious enough they must be some sort of guide, but I can't really tell if they match the taper in the pieces of wood. That is the other thing to me; the second and third shots show splitting the boards into wedge shapes which form the arc visible in the first photo.

Well, BigV, are you making a really, really BigFan?

Shawnee123 08-02-2007 11:34 AM

He's building the boat that we will take to Ram Island!

I think that the boards are straight. The arc is an optional illusion.

glatt 08-02-2007 12:07 PM

At first I thought you were finally getting around to showing how you built your kayak, and this was just before ripping strips to form the hull & deck, but you wouldn't be doing big long taper cuts like that. So I have no idea.

Are you making a big circular picnic table?

You could be right (I originally dismissed the appearance in picture #1 as such), but the second and third photos do show trapezoidal pieces. They also seem to indicate a spread in the border of the marks on the patio.

Maybe in post 124 that's true, but post 127 is clearly tapered.

Not optical illusion; optional illusion. It's not for everyone.

And is it an Ark or an arc?

With the exception of the split board, I think that they are all straight 2x8 or 2x10s.

Uisge Beatha 08-02-2007 12:42 PM

Hmmm, I just don't know about this one. However, I do have a mental image of BigV wringing his hands while chuckling evilly as we all go nuts trying to figure it out.

Fish eye lense camera. Straight boards. Looks like fencing. They all split like that when you pull them off to replace them. Who knows.

Stop stalking me.

That is exactly the right answer! Congratulations!

I have a triangular rim joist and some joists parallel to base of the triangle. The trunk of the tree extends through the rim joists at the apex of the triangle, and these boards, they are tapered, carefully tapered, cover the trapezoid that represents the "lower" 3/4 of the triangle. They are the deck, the floor of the treehouse.

The black marks on the patio are pieces of tape that I used to approximate the locations of the supporting members. It made laying out and cutting the deck boards much easier. I was standing on the ground, not on a ladder or in the air, you understand. By the way, there are not enough of them to finish the deck in these pictures. That's why you can see the lighter boards (2x4x8s) at the right. They're just there to fill things in visually for me. A placeholder for me to imagine how much more lumber I'll need to complete the deck.

Things are kind of on hold right now, but the next chance I have at a picture, I'll show you the details. The treehouse will likely be a whole thread, like the roof project.

Good call Flint!

Which makes this one, also interesting, not very mysterious. What is this?

HungLikeJesus 08-03-2007 03:27 PM

I was going to say Ponderosa Pine, but the bark looks too thin, and I can't smell any vanilla.

BigV 08-03-2007 03:59 PM

Good close guess... you may be right. Two needles per bundle, semi circular in cross section so when pressed lightly together the show a round bundle, puzzle piece bark, very fast growing. There's a lovely Western Hemlock next door, and an amazing Western Red Cedar across the alley. It's a very green neighborhood.

That sounds like Ponderosa Pine. The ones in Colorado have 2 or 3 needles per bundle and the needles are 3 to 6 inches long. The bark is thick and smells of vanilla. We have about 50 in our yard, along with a few Douglas-fir and about a dozen aspen.

WTF . . . . . . . . . . . . . I guess I kinda thought, what would you be building with weathered lumber like that... nice project, btw.

beauregaardhooligan 08-03-2007 05:32 PM

<They are the deck, the floor of the treehouse.

I was technically correct, even though Flint, & Elspode beat me to it!

There are beautiful stands of Ponderosa east of the mountains.. Pics maybe later. The bark on this on is the right shape but definitely thinner. Everything else matches. It is very fast growing. We planted it in the yard when we moved in, now it's the biggest tree on the property.

xoxoxoBruce 08-03-2007 05:38 PM

That's the tree you're killing, in the course of building that platform, to see over the fence when the chick next door is sunbathing,

Hubcap off of James Bond's newest spy car? Frisbee for masochists? Decorative sunbonnet off of a Henry Moore sculpture?

TheMercenary 08-25-2007 05:12 AM

Definately a saw blade. The picture looks a bit distorted which makes it appear convex. The tips are typical of that seen on a diamond tipped blade used for stone. May be from a rock quary because it looks huge.

xoxoxoBruce 08-25-2007 06:13 AM

Not stone, a sawmill. That dark staining, that's been mostly buffed off when it was reconditioned (teeth replaced), is from wood sap.

Shawnee123 08-25-2007 07:24 AM

Yes, it's a blade from a sawmill. xoBruce wins it. Here's one with my foot for perspective:
