My ex told me the ancient Greeks had steam-powered engines.
They discovered and demonstrated the principles, but they were thinkers/tinkerers that were living at the top of the heap.
They could have used the priciples to do actual work but then would have had to find something else for the slaves and servants to do.
The principles wouldn't be used until somebody figured out how to make a buck on it

I'm going to the store to prepare for the Ancient A's party. Anyone need anything? :)

xoxoxoBruce 03-14-2009 01:09 PM

Yes, pick me up a ho... please.

Shawnee123 03-14-2009 01:11 PM

I'll see what's in stock, Bruce. I won't get you some bargain basement ho. Nothing but the best ho for you! :)

xoxoxoBruce 03-14-2009 01:13 PM

Oh thank you. I'm flattered to know you care enough to give the very best.

Yes, darling, but I'm over here, to your left (if you're facing North, that is) - come pick me up!

xoxoxoBruce 03-14-2009 01:42 PM

Bu, but, then you'd miss the Ancient Astronauts. :o

Well apparently the people of the ancient world were a lot more ingenious than most of the people of today. Not to be insulting to modern man, but think about it. We can't figure how they did certain things, or built certain things. I mean sure, we could build pyramids today, but could we do it without relying on anything that wasn't here 5000 years ago?

sugarpop 03-14-2009 02:19 PM

Well I am going to the store now to get some ale. :D
Gotta have something to drink while watching the show.

So are we going to discuss it here afterwards or something?

xoxoxoBruce 03-14-2009 02:22 PM

If the methods for building the pyramids were useful or applicable to real life needs, rather than just grandiose projects, they would have been applied and carried down as tribal knowledge. They may very well have, we don't know, but it doesn't matter because we have better ways of building pyramids today.

Of course, if we also had some things that they did have - vast amounts of expendable slave labor and a supreme executive who can direct a significant amount of the wealth of the nation into a vanity project.

Shawnee123 03-14-2009 02:26 PM

The show makes the point that the "whole lotta labor" theory is pretty weak; there are still structures that would have been physically impossible without some kind of advanced systems to aid them. Then there's the "why" part of it.

Some we can do much easier and some we cannot figure out....leading to the show we are all watching tonight. We'll see.

Exactly - the whole work till you die, literally, too bad we don't have that anymore. (just kidding)
