back in the good/bad (delete according to prejudice) old days, that was called 'lack of moral fibre'...

xoxoxoBruce 09-21-2006 07:00 PM

Yeah, but we just laughed at the way you spell fiber and kept on doin' it.

I dunno, that rant sounds a bit teenagery, too. I dont think the pouty tantrum of isolationism is very feasible for anyone, economically. :)

Urbane Guerrilla 09-22-2006 05:28 PM

I don't either. An isolationist philosophy really only works under a certain set of international circumstance, and isn't going to work in an age of instant communications all around the globe and nuclear missiles.

Well, fantasy can be funny.

Perhaps, rich, you should take up martial arts -- something I need to get back into myself, and if you can't get out more and see how many varieties of people our wide land contains and their worthiness, at the very least read Soldier of Fortune for one year. You don't grok me because you don't have the concepts; you haven't had the education. I'm realer than you'd like, and I challenge your ideas of how human beings are by my mere existence, to say nothing of what I post. I'm here to chivvy you into a wider world, being less provincial in my outlook than you.

I have no problem with allies, as long as they are truly allies and not just using us while hating us and undermining our interests every chance they get.
I'll have to find a site I have with the votes of our closest "allies" in the UN... you really see where they stand.

I don't follow that. By isolationist, I thought we were talking about economic self reliance, self controlled, self contained, as much as possible.

Are you speaking of isolationist as a physical defense mode, a metaphorical Great Wall of China?

Do you want allies or lackeys?

9th Engineer 09-23-2006 03:21 PM

I don't think isolationism can be equated with wanting to be totally self-reliant, and if it turns out it can then maybe it's not such a bad thing. Look at the Japanese, they would be called isolationist under that argument and they're kicking ass the world over. We need to emulating THEM, not the other way 'round right now.

rkzenrage 09-23-2006 03:35 PM

I want allies.
I agree 9th, the Japanese model is an excellent one. While maintaining a strong home military and strengthening our borders.

It is very simple... don't do business with people who don't like you. If they bad-mouth you or go against you interests, on a regular basis, just don't. If they start, call in your debts from them, NOW.
We need to start making nations pay back our loans anyway & if they do not, remove natural resources. Easy enough to off-shore drill until the over-due debt is paid or something similar.

We do NOT want to get that ball rolling. We borrow considerably more than we lend.

xoxoxoBruce 09-23-2006 09:23 PM

The Japs have virtually zero natural resources, which is why they have waged war on their neighbors repeatedly.
They have the social structure to be very productive when given raw materials and a market.... we gave them both.

You see, this is the quality stuff that makes me think UG isn't 'real'. It's wonderful prose, egocentric bordering on narcissist. It reminds me of the bad fiction contest they hold each year in honor of the guy who first came up with "It was a dark and stormy night". Using 'grok' was brilliant since a Heinlein reference is absolutely necessary in a post from a modern age warrior (I prefer Kipling). Still, UG didn't quite hit that evocative tone that's really needed. Let me try to punch it up a little.

Perhaps, rich, you should follow the warriors path and take up martial arts. As I sit here contemplating the vast multitudes of honorable and worthy men and women contained within the proud vistas of this great nation, I feel that you should expand your mind as well and immerse yourself in the community and philosophy to be found in Solider of Fortune. In the dark corners of the stormy night, my reality challenges you to accept my teachings, for I have walked a strange and dangerous path. I am the bringer of truth, here to lead your unworthy self to the fountain of knowledge that is fed by adversity and nurtured by the sacrifice of heroes.

How's that?
