I just went through the thread adding up the time I probably spent on each step, and I think I put about 115 - 135 hours into this project. I didn't keep clear enough records to know for sure. Figure 3 work weeks. And I spent about $300 on materials for it. To pay myself minimum wage, I would have to charge $2,040 for this saw.
Laguna sells a 16 inch band saw for $3,499, so I'm cheaper than that. But Grizzly sells one for $850. |
The next one you could do in less than half the time, though

The skills and knowledge you got from this project are worth a few grand.
Plus the pride of accomplishment and the respect of your peers... who will ask you to do things for them now you have a bandsaw. :D |
Hammer a copper penny into a flat oval, bang a 1 into it, and affix it with copper tacks. Then make a 2nd one, 3td, etc, and sell it to someone.... Like me or foot or Bruce..... Defray your cost.

I'd buy one.

I will once I own a home again. Maybe 3 or 4 years hence

Since this thread was so popular it was suggested someone start a new thread of a project they're building.
While surfing the web I spotted an ad saying, "Build the Best Saw in the World". Lots of hoopla each ending with "Best Saw in the World". So I go to their site and they'll sell you detailed plans, an instruction video, and bill of materials for "Best Saw in the World", only $40. http://cellar.org/2017/saw1.jpg WTF? Saw? That doesn't look like a saw? Then they show what the "Best Saw in the World" can do. http://cellar.org/2017/saw2.jpg Dude, that ain't what a saw does. Then they say it can be controlled from your computer or laptop. OK it's a computer controlled milling machine. I wonder how much it would cost to build it, 3 lead screws, 3control boxes with 3 stepper motors can't be cheap. Then you have to write the programs, I know it's not that simple. I did that for a living for many years. Interesting, but that ain't no saw, Bubba.:headshake link |
