Radiohead - The Tourist

wolf 06-15-2007 12:34 AM

Well, my plan was to listen to some very cool environments CDs (I use one called 'Timberwolf in the Tall Pines' for meditation, decided I needed some ocean noises and a couple of thunderstorms, so I ordered them from amazon.)

Notice, how I said it "was" my plan?

The box arrived yesterday, and all of the CDs inside were crushed, jewel box bits all over the place. I used the automated returns thingy and got an RMA number and had them boxed up and mailed within an hour of receiving them. This morning I received an email from some outsourced ninny named "Bindu" telling me they were sorry about the jewel cases and they'd send me some and I could just move the inserts and CDs into them.

Shot back a cranky email indicating I had already mailed everything back and that the condition of the contents was such that I didn't even bother to break the shrinkwrap on the CDs.

Bindu has since apologized for his hastiness, and replacement CDs are on their way.

So, consequently, I'm listening to the air conditioning hum.

Tia Fuller - Healing Space

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov...35341aded3.jpg

Biography by Matt Collar
Saxophonist Tia Fuller is an expressive, forward-thinking musician with a bent toward post-bop and soulful, expansive jazz. Interested in music from a young age, Fuller's piano and flute studies began around age three and culminated in her earning a bachelor's degree in music from Spelman College in the '90s. Later, Fuller sought her masters degree in jazz pedagogy from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Subsequently, she found performance opportunities with a bevy of name artists and ensembles, such as Charles Fambrough, Mickey Roker, Ralph Peterson, T.S. Monk, Rufus Reid, and others — including the Gerald Wilson Orchestra and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. She released her debut album, Healing Space, on Mack Avenue in 2007.

Right now, I am listening to Duke Ellington's album Such Sweet Thunder. The whole suite is dedicated to the Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Ontario; so each song is inspired by the bard. Has tunes like 'Sonnet for Caesar' and 'Lady Mac' (the track which is currently playing).

Right this very second I am listening to 'Sailing By' ....a piece of music that Radio 4 always plays shortly before it closes for the night ....just before the Shipping forecast.

From wikipedia....who'd h'a'thunk Sailing by would be in wiki?

Quote:

Context and usage
Sailing By is played every night on BBC Radio 4 at around 00:45hrs before the late Shipping Forecast. Its tune is repetitive, assisting in its role of serving as a signal for sailors tuning in to be able to easily identify the radio station. It also functions as a buffer - depending on when the final programme before closedown finishes, Sailing By (or part of it) is played as a 'filler' as the shipping forecast starts at 00:48hrs precisely. The initial reason for its introduction was because of the indeterminate finish time for the preceding Midnight News, leading to filling music being played until the Shipping Forecast was due to start. Sailing By was added to allow for a clear break between the end of the music and the start of the forecast.

[edit] Popularity
Besides its intended function, Sailing By is thought of affectionately by many British radio listeners as it is considered a soothing accompaniment to bedtime. The lead singer of the Britpop band Pulp, Jarvis Cocker chose Sailing By as one of his Desert Island Discs, saying for many years he had used it "as an aid to restful sleep".

The piece featured as the second track on a single recorded by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia in a quest to save the Radio 4 UK Theme. In 1993 there was a similar reaction by BBC listeners when Sailing By was temporarily taken off the air on weekday schedules, leading to it being re-instated in 1995.The recording used by the BBC is not available commercially, but several similar recordings are available on CD.

*grins* don't fuck wit the radio4 audience. We'll peacefully protest your ass.
