A built-in indoor trampoline?

A landing pad for alien spaceships?

Can you give a hint, because this one is driving me bonkers.

classicman 03-25-2011 08:36 AM

It certainly looks like a drum head. Why all the markings?
So that you can customize it, artistically?

Flint 03-25-2011 10:24 AM

Nope, nope, nope.

Think about the materials...how it was made, and why.

footfootfoot 03-25-2011 11:14 AM

I see paper, tape (double stick?), and small markings at regular spacing, maybe every inch?

Are they for plotting some sort of graph or enlarging or reducing a drawing that then gets transferred to something like a drum head? Are you going to Peartify your drums?

infinite monkey 03-25-2011 11:34 AM

Is it something to do with some kind of satellite dish?

HungLikeJesus 03-25-2011 12:37 PM

Is it a template for making drum heads?

Tulip 03-25-2011 01:00 PM

it's for cross stitching. hehe...just kidding...:p:

glatt 03-25-2011 01:12 PM

is it a template for putting a design on a drum head?

Flint 03-25-2011 02:31 PM

Please, allow me to relieve you of the misapprehension that this has anything to do with drums, drum heads etc. It doesn't.

footfootfoot 03-25-2011 02:58 PM

What kind of head is it for?

infinite monkey 03-25-2011 03:04 PM

So, does it have something to do with drums?

A base for a pop-up tent?

glatt 03-25-2011 03:13 PM

Is it a template for a sumo robot battle ring?

footfootfoot 03-25-2011 03:58 PM

If those are 1 inch spaces it is ~20" dia.

What is the material? Paper? Why the tape at the circumference?

footfootfoot 03-25-2011 04:00 PM

You're making an air gladiator ring

Yes, double-stick tape, markings at 1" increments. The question is: why?

I measured it with my ruler - the marks at the bottom/left are farther apart than the marks at the top/right.

don't start, next you'll say it's elliptical.

Looks like you guys think you're a couple of jokers here, huh? We'll just see how funny it is when... well I guess I can't really do anything about it.

well markings like that are often used to plot points on an xy graph for lots of applications, transferring or scaling drawings is one type of application, depicting data is another. Why a circle? What is circular besides drum heads and cymbals? (and besides, scaling and transferring drawings this way is terribly retro) Windows can be circular, game boards could be circular.

But why the tape? why does this need to be carefully taped/registered in place?

Something to do with checking the area of rectangles or other shapes? Some type of measuring device?

capnhowdy 03-25-2011 07:40 PM

A drummer's stool strainer?

Do drummers typically have chunky stools?

It's to stick on the top of an uplighting floor lamp. You'll prick holes in it to recreate the night sky on your family room ceiling.

Spexxvet 03-26-2011 07:57 AM

You said prick.:p:

Double-sided tape.

footfootfoot 03-26-2011 10:31 AM

I know it's double sided, am I looking through something clear at the paper below? Is this some sort of erasable plotting device that uses a china marker to write on glass or plastic?

footfootfoot 03-26-2011 10:33 AM

looking closer at the tape I can see where the tape isn't in contact with the glass or plastic, so we are looking through onto the paper, or what ever it is, Still no idea of the function.

Flint 03-26-2011 10:51 AM

So could you describe to me exactly what configuration of the materials you think you're looking at?

Sorry, missed this post. This is what it is, although I use dry-erase markers. Any ideas why I would need a 1" grid?

Flint 03-26-2011 10:56 AM

I use this for a very specific activity that I'm waiting for somebody to think of.

Are you re-caning a chair?

Are you preparing to custom wrap dice?

Are you preparing a display for your remarkable bullion cube collection?

Gravdigr 03-27-2011 11:12 AM

An origami doohickey?

footfootfoot 03-27-2011 08:05 PM

does it involve scoring a game or keeping track of changing data?
Is it used for plotting points?
Is the circular shape critical to its function?

Spexxvet 03-28-2011 08:22 AM

infinite monkey 03-28-2011 08:45 AM

I've ceased to care. :p:

What is it, already?

Flint 03-28-2011 10:10 AM

It's a sheet of Ghostlines poster board, with 1" grid marked off, double-sided taped to the bottom of a 20" diameter piece of table glass. The glass is round because that is what I had on hand. I would have prefered a larger, rectangular piece of table glass.

I draw on the glass surface with dry erase markers; the grid serves as a guide/measure for the dimensions of the drawing.

What is it?
It is used in a game. The game is played on a 1" grid. Any ideas? It's not Battleship.

glatt 03-28-2011 10:11 AM

Yes, it is a homemade "battlemat" for staging Dungeons & Drangons encounters. Glatt wins again.

I've been going on Saturday nights to a D&D group at an old, dear friend of mine's house. We bring the kids (he and his wife have similar-aged kids) and they have a movie watching slumber party while the adults relive our nerdy youths around the dining room table. Our awesome, nerdy wives play with D&D with us. We play the new 4e (4th Edition) D&D, which incidentally is not produced TSR anymore, but Wizards of the Coast, who is now owned by Hasbro.

I suppose this is akin to some earlier generation's playing of Bridge or some such activity.

Glinda 03-28-2011 10:15 AM

Scrabble?

glatt 03-28-2011 10:32 AM

That's so awesome that your wives play too.

I occasionally play a game I invented called "Captain Justice" with my kids. It's a very loosely run role playing game where we just talk about what we do. We're superheros and it's a lot of work coming up with new missions and bad guys to fight, so I get sick of playing it, but my kids love it.

Flint 03-28-2011 10:38 AM

That's awesome to hear glatt, because I realized I could play D&D with my kids on this homemade board. With some exciting drawings, fun miniatures, and lowering the burden of "rules" while raising the ability of "imagination" to create, as you say, a very loosely run RPG. Glad to hear you've tried this and it works!

glatt 03-28-2011 10:51 AM

They love the imagination part of it.

One of their favorite parts is where I get lazy and say we have to do some sort of Olympic competition against a rival good super hero league. It's a lot easier than thinking up a mission. Usually the competitions are silly ones. Like you have to harvest the honey from a hive of honey bees. Your character has the power of flight and speed and x-ray vision, and your opponent is the Hulk. You calmly harvest the honey, fighting your urge to go fast, and wearing the beekeeper suit and using the smoke. Meanwhile, the Hulk gets stung a few times, gets really pissed off, and smashes his hive. You win.

Flint 03-28-2011 11:44 AM

I'm thinking of ways to make it more of a puzzle-solving RPG (less violent), although my wife points out correctly that the kids do need to learn strategic thinking. We could pepper the game with suggestions from Machiavelli and Sun Tzu.
