Also, if you like radio shows, This American Life is completely amazing. It's on NPR on Sundays, but you can listen to past shows via realaudio on their website.

vintage labels

this stuff is cool.

sites that 'prevent' right-clicking are cute.

~james

juju 06-05-2002 11:27 PM

Interesting. In Mozilla, right-clicking produces the 'don't steal' dialog box AND the right-click menu.

perth 06-05-2002 11:42 PM

i noticed that too. ie6, for all its shortcomings, has a small toolbar that pops up on images allowing you to print or save the image right there. depending on the script they use, sometimes you can left-click and hold, right-click and hold, release left then release right for the context menu to pop up. not on this site tho. theyre too 'clever'. but it is a really cool site. that stuff is art as far as im concerned and i get a kick out of vintage stuff like that. does anyone know of any sites with good high-quality (high-res) vintage movie posters?

I fault not the webmasters as much as the program that lets them get away with it. It's my fucking program on my fucking computer so it should do what I want it to, not anyone else.

I installed Mozilla RC1 a couple weeks ago. It installed icons all over the fucking place.. AOL, Net2Phone, all kinds of shit were all over my system tray, Quick Launch, top of the Start Menu, Programs under the Start Menu, my quick-link IE toolbar, my IE Favorites, my desktop.. every goddamned place they could think of. Not once did it ever ask if I wanted any fucking icons.

But as pissed as I am at that kinda shitty programming, I'm just as pissed at Windows for letting programs get away with this crap. Creating an icon should be some sorta system call where you can specify that a program doesn't have the right to create icons unless you say it can. Ditto for changing file associations.

It is heartening, however, to hear that Mozilla allows preventing popup/under ads, sites maximizing themselves, etc. Maybe it's worth another try after all.

juju 06-06-2002 01:23 AM

Mozilla does not, to my knowledge, do that. You're probably speaking of Netscape. And yes, it bugs the shit out of me when programs do that, too. That's why I use Mozilla and not Netscape. :)

juju 06-06-2002 01:25 AM

Also, most programs add an extra directory that is the name of their company. This directory is completely pointless, and serves only as an advertisement to their company. Within their pointless directory is one thing: another directory -- which contains the actual program.

I hate this practice with all of my being. Every time I see it (i.e., every time I install a windows program), I want to track the programmer down and strangle him. It makes me want to instigate revolution.

It's things like this that make me not be able to stand being in Windows for more than a few hours at a time.

Yes, you're right, it was Netscape RC1. Mmkay, maybe I will give it another try.

As far as the directory names with the company, this is actually a "recommendation" of Microsoft, and most install programs (the programs programmers use to write programs to install their programs) default to doing this.

I think it's silly as well, and so I change it whenever I write an install program, but you shouldn't blame the programmers too much.

Which tends to cause the boot drive to slowly fill up with crap that you can't easily move. I know Winusers that have bought new computers just because of this.

Except my hair is WAY longer. Like... down to my ass longer.

Sycamore's is scary accurate. That's almost exactly what he looked like when he was down here. Cool.

My hair color is lighter, too. And I shaved the sideburns down to the beard, so it's more like a light moustache down to a light goatee. But yeah.

okay. How aree you all getting the image from onee location to the other. IOW, how do I save it?

I used the print screen feature, pasted it into WordPad, copied it to my clipboard, then cut it and shrunk it using my scanner.

LordSludge 06-07-2002 03:36 PM

It's a bit of a PITA saving/posting the image, that's the main thing I don't like about the site. I wish it would create a URL embedded w/ the various parameters you could just send somebody.

Anyhow, I did a [Alt]-[PrtSc] to screen capture the image, dumped it into my paint program, and exported it as a .GIF file. Then I uploaded to my web space at my ISP and posted the linked image here.

Like I said: a Pain In The Ass. But I do it so much w/ Fark, etc., that it's no big deal anymore.

I think Microsoft can take their recomendation and shove it up their ass. I mean... really.. what sense does this make? Argh! And the programmers should know better.

Ain't it though?

Here's Rho. The hair doesn't quite look right, but it'll have to do in the world of South Park.

BrianR 06-08-2002 12:21 PM

the heck with it.

It's not worth it to me to try to reinstall my scanner and find a decent paint program (anyone have an older version of Photoshop that won't cost $600) just to see what I'd look like as a South Park character. It doesn't do my natural aura and beauty justice anyway.

Admit it: You are an endless source of fascination to yourself.

How do you compare to others? What are your qualities? This sort of navel-gazing can be amply indulged online, where you can test your IQ and EQ, assess your assertiveness level, rate your personality type or pinpoint a suitable hobby.

From these larger issues, you can move down to the nitpicky stuff: Exactly which of the Three Stooges are you most like? What fashion decade suits your personal style? If you were a member of the Spanish Inquisition, what torture method would you employ?

Links to hundreds of tests and quizzes in 16 categories — from sexual "purity" to entrepreneurship — can be found at www.allthetests.com.

Just don't take these tests too seriously. They might be designed by anyone from a psychologist to the bimbo next door.
