I'm glad I dont use Professional, cause I SO pressed that.

dar512 07-10-2006 07:40 PM

I think that's actually a driver thing. At least it was on my work machine. When I got my new machine last year I couldn't figure out why control-alt-up arrow wasn't working in Eclipse (Java IDE). It really ticked me off when I found out. Drivers should not preempt key combinations by default.

Elspode 07-10-2006 09:37 PM

What are you guys, a bunch of sadists? *What* happens when you press Ctrl Alt UpArrow?

Happy Monkey 07-10-2006 10:08 PM

Nothing, usually. Now, the other arrows...

It removes entire directory trees, instantly! Isn't that useful?

There's an easy way to prevent that.

Just create a file (any file - any format) then save it as spotted.owl and put it near the top.

footfootfoot 07-11-2006 11:45 AM

heh heh

Microsoft's idea of a feature, eh? Or is it just a sick Easter egg?

Kitsune 07-11-2006 09:05 PM

Beestie, I'd add that to The Hall of Fame if it weren't already here.

BigV 07-12-2006 09:35 AM

So I was at Best Buy yesterday, and as I walked through the laptop showroom, I tried the ctrl-alt-down combo. Nuttin. Checked the properties of "My Computer", sure enough, XP Home. Tried again on the next one over. Voila! And the next one and the next one and the next one.... It was worth the karma cost!

You guys are either full of shit or every copy of XP Pro that I run is broken. ("fixed"?) It doesn't do jack.

I commented on this above. I don't think it's XP. I'm pretty sure it's a video driver thing. The Intel driver on my work machine did weird things with those keys until I turned it off.

BigV 07-12-2006 12:05 PM

Quote:

Solve the problem. With the computer comes the Intel Graphics Driver and it loads a program called hkcmd.exe. I disabled this through the program's hotkey tab and suddenly my Ctrl-Alt-Arrow started working again.

(This is c:\windows\system32\hkcmd.exe, labeled as HotKeysCmds in the HKLM>Software>Microsoft>windows>currentversion>run)
from here.
more
Intel video driver thang, I'm sure. Look for hkcmd.exe. If it's running, buckle up. If not, nothing. Normally, it runs on this pc. When I summoned task manager and ended that process, the key combo did nothing. Oh well.

Ibby 07-13-2006 06:45 PM

I decided that I wanted to put my ONE THOUSANDth post here.

BigV 07-20-2006 01:02 PM

dar512 makes a bold understatement, worthy of inclusion here.

Gee...I don't know what to say. Strangely, I live my life by that principle. As an imperfect specimen myself (let's face it, I'm not even on the same conceptual *continent* as Perfect), I have long known that inside is more important than outside.

Welcome to the Hall of Fame, headsplice.

This excerpt of headsplice's post comes with a *lot* of context. This is an excellent discussion, but his remark stands out because it's so true and so eloquent.

Flint - it's nice if you post a link, so that those of us who don't read the whole board all the time can see the context.

mrnoodle 10-12-2006 04:42 PM

I *think* that's from the "if you outlaw guns" thread, but I'm not sure.

Torrere 10-12-2006 06:52 PM

It is from the "if you outlaw guns, ..." thread. And the post by Urbane Guerrilla that prompted BigV's post was so incredibly condescending that UG deserves whatever abuse he gets.

Flint 10-12-2006 08:04 PM

I thought it was funny regardless of the context (like "who got PWNED" or whatever...)

I submit Lumberjim to the Hall of Fame not on the basis of any post in particular but as a Lifetime Achievement Award for providing the Cellar with an as-yet never-ending stream of creative, fun and sometimes provocative ideas that have made the Cellar a better place.

LJ belongs in the Cellar Hall of Fame.

Cock!

zippyt 10-14-2006 11:15 AM

Seconded !!!

Flint 10-14-2006 08:02 PM

I'll contribute my cock to this...

lumberjim 10-14-2006 11:32 PM

oh, you dick! that's just rude. Now that $50 i sent you last week seems like a bribe. I feel so dirty. like a ....whoreberjim.

I'd like to nominate Ut and jinx and zippy and Pie and griiff and wolf and you, and bruce and foot3 and all the rest of you wankers for the same goddamn reason.

there is no I in team, motherfucker!

one cellar. one cock. one!

yeah, i like rum, so what?

SteveDallas 10-14-2006 11:54 PM

There is not I in team, but there is an M and an E.

zippyt 10-15-2006 12:05 AM

dar512 10-16-2006 09:03 AM

This has all been very inspiring in a grassroots-democracy/teamwork/win-one-for-the-gipper kind of way.

I'm thinking you probably wouldn't be allowed to teach it this way in high-school civics ... but lot more kids would pay attention.

Edited to add - I could actually hear the fife and drum soundtrack as I read this last bunch of posts. :)

I can personally testify to the validity of this statement. I have posted opinions for which I was unable to provide reasons due to various ethical considerations. My opinions did indeed fly, just not very far which was to be expected. xoxoxoBruce's observation provides an outstanding continuation of the theme set forth by the forum Administrator in the FAQ section:

"The Cellar: What It Is by Undertoad, owner/admin dude ...
The Cellar is like an electronic tavern. Behave as you might at a real-life tavern. Don't barge in and interrupt every table in the place. Walk in and sit down, wait for something you know about and politely put in your two cents.
"I understand where you're coming from but don't agree." (with or without reasons) ... will fly. "You don't agree with me so you're an a**hole and your mother wears combat boots" ... will not fly.

Thank you for the observation xoxoxoBruce.

Okay, so its not really from the cellar, but its between two cellarites (me and breakingnews), and its just so great, I have to put it here.

Quote:

wanger114: trust me, i'm just like you - i am hand and foot for every girl i like
wanger114: it feels great, and it is great
wanger114: but then along comes one ragged bitch who kicks you in the teeth and spits on you
wanger114: haha
wanger114: wow, i'm not bitter, i swear

Elspode 11-02-2006 01:33 PM

Assuming that you haven't nominated your own dialogue, and that what is here was from breakingnews, I have the following observations:

1) I find it not only amusing that he has chosen "wanger" as a handle (pun intended), but that apparently 113 others have done so before he got to it.

2) If he is indeed the only wanger, is the 114 an expression of measurement? If so, what units?

3) Bitter much? nah.
