Well, I love listening to the Jazz shows on our local PR station here. I usually use it as backgroud music so I really never learn anything from it, and therefore know next to nothing about Jazz. but yeah, I do like it a lot.

I'm pretty keen on jazz and most of those names are at least familiar to me (thanks, Dad!).

As for right now, I've got Lords of Acid, the Voodoo-U CD.

lookout123 09-29-2004 06:08 PM

anthrofuge - straight up metal up your ass. ok, they are pretty funny and obsessed with pirates. if you are really bored and curious you can check them out at anthrofuge.com or just click here.

yes, i'm a shill they are old friends of mine who creat new bands about every 6 months, put out a cd, get bored and start over.

Jacquelita 10-05-2004 08:18 PM

the local "public" radio station is a not-so-guilty pleasure of mine. WXPN (88.5 on the radio dial) has recently upgraded their digs, and to celeberate, solicited their membership to send in their all time top ten lists. They compiled the top 885 songs and are playing them all this week from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm (Eastern)

A lot of old rock classics things like Neil Young (comes a time)- Stones (Angie) - even some things from the 20's and 30's -also Frank (ol blue eyes is in there, elvis, beatles etc...)

I have to admit, my radio has been cranked pretty loud the last few days.

You can check out the play list at xpn.org - if you're out of the area, you can stream it live from this site.

I'll let my collection speak for me.

Nasty habit of mine, I will listen to great guitarists just for the sake of listening to great guitarists. If anyone else shares this penchant, or just likes simple, barebones jazz, there's a man by the name of Joe Pass who is abso-fucking-lutely amazing. I also really dig Coltrane, Davis, Dave Brubeck, and a really amazing singer doing covers whose name is Renee Olstead. She's a really talented kid, and only about 16 years old if memory serves me

Griff 10-24-2004 07:48 PM

Frank Black and the Catholics

My jazz tends to run toward Bela Fleck and David Grisman but I do like the old big band stuff, and Coltrane.

warch 10-29-2004 05:05 PM

jazz guitar yah:

Always Way Coolest Kenny Burrell, Classic Charlie Christian, The Amazing Grant Green, Spare Wes Mongomery, Old tyme Eddie Lang, Swinging Tiny Grimes, Kicking T Bone Walker.

Find Burrell's "Midnight Blue", Green's "Iron City" and/or "Idle Moments" and you will be happy.

Griff 11-05-2004 06:41 PM

Radio Paradise. Recently played Crash Test Dummies, Bjork, Smiths, The Frames, Wilco, Alex Gopher, SRV, Depeche Mode... not a bad playlist compared to any of our clear chan... must not rant in entertainment.

Cyber Wolf 11-06-2004 06:46 AM

2 CDs in rotation at the moment:

Within Temptation's Mother Earth
Black Eyed Peas' Elephunk

I was listening to Joe Pass just yesterday, an album called "Unforgettable", which is just Joe and a guitar, playing his arrangements of many well-known standards from several genres. It is just like sitting in a room with him and listening to him play, so present is the recording. You can even hear him *breathe*. Needless to say, the music is amazingly intimate.

I saw Joe Pass about 20 years ago. He was, as you say, abso-fucking-lutely amazing. His death in 1994 left a large void in the world of jazz guitar.

Hmmm.. emusic has that album. Do you think that'd be a good intro to him?

Elspode 11-06-2004 05:20 PM

That's exactly where I got it. :)

I would describe this recording as being primarily for a serious lover of guitar music. It is entirely unaccompanied, not 100% free of flaws (one-take, live digital recordings all by a master of his instrument), and therefore not for casual listening.

If you love hearing an artist at the peak of their craft, with all the embellishment stripped away, so that you can enjoy the pure, real thing...yes, this is a great album as an introduction. The songs will be familiar, yet arranged in original ways, with a lot of improvisation thrown in.

When I saw Joe Pass all those years ago, he held a crowd of about 1000 in awe doing exactly the same thing...just playing his guitar.

warch 11-06-2004 09:47 PM

I hear that is a kickass piece of work.

Anyone able to recommend some good tango music?

Bullitt 11-07-2004 09:10 PM

Some Taking Back Sunday, Cake, Bel Auburn, and Break of Day (<--local band).

With a little Frank Sinatra thrown in the mix.

alphageek31337 11-08-2004 02:05 PM

Along the vein of radio paradise (which is pretty much great), there are two shoutcast stations I listen to pretty regularly: http://nugs.net and http://stumbleinthedark.com. Both are quite cool if you're into jam bands, and stumble has been known to slip in such greatness as Pedro the Lion every once in a while. Nugs is the favorite, though, as it tends to play entire live shows by different jam bands, and often offers the entire show for 128kbps mp3 download.

"I...dig....music...............I'M ON DRUGS!!!!!!!!"

edit: Also, people in Pittsburgh, Listen To More Public Radio. 91.3fm WYEP is insanely great, and they do a lot of cool stuff in the community. Not too long ago I got the chance to go down to a little theatre in, I believe, 'Sliberty (East Liberty to non-residents) and see The Beatles' "Hard Day's Night" film. Just cool, especially for a young kid who didn't get to see all this stuff when it was the big thing.

warch 11-08-2004 03:20 PM

I have some kinda gypsy Franco- Argentinian- Finnish- Djangoesque accordion tango (Oscar Alleman, Cafe Accordion Orchestra, Baguette Quartet) All great!, but would also love to find some good, classic tango tipica. Ya know, forbidden dance and all. I'll let you know if I hear anything good. :)

Roosta 11-09-2004 05:05 PM

Keane- Hopes And Fears. Superb album!

flippant 11-09-2004 08:24 PM

Tricky- formerly of Massive Attack. Nice.

Sved 11-22-2004 01:24 PM

"Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Radio Show."
Happy Monkey, if you can help me to get that, I don't know how to thank you !

And i'm typing now on Atom Heart Mother from Pink Floyd, just after "Barb4ry" from Ez3kiel...

Happy Monkey 11-22-2004 08:57 PM

I'm afraid I don't have the upload capability for something like that. You just have to keep your eyes open for when things like that are available.

Cyber Wolf 11-23-2004 09:58 AM

Bob James' Snowbird Fantasy

on repeat.

Griff 11-23-2004 12:57 PM

Caught a tune by John Chibadura on RP a couple days back, fabulous stuff. Gonna have to check it out.

warch 11-23-2004 01:18 PM

Madeleine Peyroux- Careless Love

Griff 11-23-2004 01:40 PM

Anybody have knowlege of the edgier side of spanish guitar? Tony Bandaras did a couple of pretty lame movies where he was an assasin who played some pretty cool licks. Any knowlege of where that sound falls on the musical spectrum?

wolf 11-26-2004 01:35 AM

If you are a user of Yahoo Messenger, you MUST listen to this station on Launchcast Radio.

Nuevo Chicano mariachi/flamenco/ranchero? I'd get soundtracks and follow the leads into Mexico. Sounds like a great trip!

TheDormouse 12-21-2004 07:33 AM

Boy, has this thread died off!! Time to revitalize!

My current list of fave CD's are:

Patti Smith's Horses
Eminem's The Eminem Show
Jane's Addiction's Nothing Shocking
Moussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain/Pictures at an Exhibition
Chant I: The Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo De Silos
Douglas Adams reading Dirk Gentlys Holistic Detective Agency
(I might also throw some metal, zydeco, or more classical, alternative, rap, etc., in the mix, depending on my mood--admittedly putting this on 'random' can be a bit jarring) ;)

elSicomoro 12-22-2004 11:34 PM

I just bought my 500th CD.

wolf 12-23-2004 12:19 AM

Mr. Hankey's Christmas Classics.

Yes, all the greats are there, including Lonely Jew at Christmas, Christmastime in Hell, and The Dreidel Song.

Torrere 12-23-2004 05:52 AM

Juno Reactor - Labyrinth

My mother honestly likes it, despite her traditional abhorrence for pounding bass (although the bass here rolls more than it pounds). I think that is a strong voucher in favor of this CD.

richlevy 12-23-2004 08:15 PM

I went a little crazy at Overstock.com and bought a slew of music and 'book tape' CD's, mostly for $1 each. Some of them are very odd. The Kacapi Suling Cinta is Javanese ethnic dance music. So far the Viva Cubop 2 CD is my favorite with everything from salsa to very cool jazz. I've only had time to listen to 4 or 5 albums all of the way through. The grooves albums are interesting in that they are samplers put out by record companies. People are always complaining about buying a whole CD for one good song and not realizing that they usually end up putting a collection of good songs from different artists on one of these samplers or a movie soundtrack which ends up in the bargain bin.

One surprise was in the folk legends. Since the Dubliners were in it I expected traditional Irish folk songs. When I saw the title of the second song by Richard Digance was "Drag Queen Blues", I assumed it was some bit of slang having to do with fishing, like the term 'dragline', since there was a "Net Hauling Song" on the CD.

It turned out to be a song about cross-dressing. It was pretty funny.

It's got a special tang to it.

xoxoxoBruce 12-30-2004 07:37 AM

Tang? He's out in space?
Listening to MrNoodle rippin' it up.
Reminds me of Joe Satriani at the Tower, sitting in the 2nd row, right behind his Mom.

Griff 12-30-2004 07:42 AM

As soon as Pete gets off the trainer she'll be continuing our annual music rebuild. The cd carousel(sp) holds 200 but we have syc numbers (better music though bro). Anyway new music to yammer about soon.

elSicomoro 12-30-2004 09:08 AM

Are you saying that the music I like is inferior? You know, I'm off until Tuesday...don't make me drive up there and kick your ass.

Elspode 12-30-2004 10:01 AM

I just heard a short piece on NPR that is going to force me to find the CD they were extoling. It seems someone has done a tribute album to the Moody Blues...by doing their music in bluegrass arrangements.

It sounded really, really good. Brilliantly good, in fact.

glatt 12-30-2004 10:54 AM

I heard that too. At least, I heard a snippet of it before jumping into the shower. It sounded pretty good.

Griff 01-07-2005 06:58 PM

Gonna have to check that out!

One sign of a great rock-n-roll album is the volume its at when you're done listening. Ben Harper Live From Mars turns out to be one loud mother pumpin album. Glory and Consequence, Excuse Me Mr., Sexual Healing, Steal My Kisses, and Burn One Down... are you getting the picture?

elSicomoro 01-07-2005 07:47 PM

I was not aware that there is a recent documentary about the Moog and a soundtrack to it. I was listening to it today, and it was quite good.

Let's see...what else have I been listening to? Well, a lot...but among that lot:

Marvin Gaye--Here, My Dear: This is CD # 500 in my collection, incidentally.

Miles Davis--ESP

Beatallica--Beatallica and A Garage Dayz Nite

Queensryche--Promised Land

Hugo Zorilla 01-23-2005 08:23 AM

The last 5 CDs I played:

1. The Misfits - BLOOD-DRIVE - Live with Zoli (from Ignite)
An interesting bootleg if you can find it. Zoli took lead vocals only 4 days before this show. Impressive showing, I must say.

2. Charles Manson - LIE - The Love and Terror Cult
Charlie is so versatile, but he don't surf...

3. Tracy Lords - 1000 Fires
A technicality. My wife wanted to listen to it, and since she refuses to understand how to work a CD player...

4. White Zombie - PsychoHeadBlowOut / Soul Crusher / Make Them Die Slowly
A wonderful bootleg from a store in NYC. If you can find it, get it, even if you don't listen to it. The resale is worth it. After I bought it ($10), I found out that it goes for $30 - $50.

5. GG Allin 7-CD compilation from a European CD dealer
Amazing what you can do with a CD burner and CD-Rs. GG Allin and / The Murder Junkies / Texas Nazis / Scum Fucs / Shrinkwrap / The HolyMen /The Jabbers / and the rare 7" with The AIDS Brigade. I know this is stretching the idea of the thread, but I consider it a box set, so I apologize (waddle doodle, I am the Greaseman...)

lookout123 01-25-2005 02:41 PM

The last 5 i've listened to:

Helmet - Size Matters
Shai Hulud - That Within Blood Ill Tempered
Snapcase - Lookinglasself, and Design for Automation
Miles Davis - Blue
The Blamed - Again

jinx 01-27-2005 05:25 PM

Warren Haynes live - And it stoned me, Soulshine

Trilby 01-27-2005 08:13 PM

A bit late, I know, but Lucinda Williams, Car Tires on Gravel Road. Awesome!

Elspode 01-28-2005 01:54 PM

Brian Wilson - Smile : Orchestral vocal/pop for old hippies. Verging on elevator music in places, but with excellent new versions of "Villains and Heroes" and "Good Vibrations". Notable because Brian is, at last, sane enough to realize the creation he should have released 40 years ago.

ZZ Top - Best of: Juvenile, prurient, musico-porn-double-entendre. And that's just the best stuff about it. I loves me some "Rough Boy" and "LaGrange".

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick: Eveyone else thinks Aqualung is Ian Anderson's greatest work. I think TAAB is.

Beestie 01-28-2005 02:09 PM

My current selection of WMP radio stations: The energy dance radio is mostly Trance and is really good if you like that sort of thing. I understand UT really loves Trance http://www.cellar.org/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Telefunken 01-30-2005 10:58 PM

Undertoad should check out DI.fm's Trance channels if he hasn't already.

Torrere 01-31-2005 01:28 AM

I've been listening to:
Juno Reactor - Labyrinth
Paradise Lost - Symbol of Life

This year is going to mark the release of five new CDs from Bill Leeb / Rhys Fulber. Awesome!

perth 02-01-2005 05:58 PM

Pixies - Wave of Mutilation. It's a "Best of" disc. I listened to the Pixies when I was younger, but kind of forgot about the band as time went on. I was in Borders the other day looking for something, and couldn't find anything I wanted. Suddenly my toddler points at this disc and says "Dad, get that. It's yellow!". Kid's got good taste in music. :)
