I'm glad things are better for you, Sam.

Nor me.

I have a hard time keeping everyone straight unless they post a lot or have some distinguishing characteristic. Nirvana is chihuahua lady in my mind. But I tend to mix up Lamplighter and Perry Winkle. I don't know why. My mind is a mystery, even to me. The same with Glatt and Griff (names too similar maybe) and foot^3 and lookout123.

I know Tony is against avatars, but I'm a very visual person and it would help keep people straight - especially if everyone used a head shot.

No avatars here, huh? I think it helps as well.

No, I could not imitate Cicero even if I wanted to - and I don't. She is 30 years younger than me, and she is absolutely unique onto herself. I used to call Cicero "my little tiger" because we used to have some real spats, but we always got over them - eventually.

I miss her lots :( and I hope she is getting the treatment she needs and will be back soon.

infinite monkey 10-13-2011 11:32 AM

As I said before, I miss her too. There's no one quite like her.

I hope she can come back too.

jimhelm 10-14-2011 08:50 AM

I'm glad this was such a non event. ferreals ferreal.

Aliantha 10-14-2011 08:54 AM

Jim, I have to say that I really think you've come a long way. I hope that doesn't come off as patronising because that's not how I mean it.

I like the new Jim.

Sundae 10-14-2011 09:10 AM

Ali, Limey - I had no idea either.
But then I don't think of that sort of thing really. I tend to take posters at face value.

I was here while Mari was, although not for as long as others.
She welcomed me when I first came and I didn't have any personal issues with her.
It was right for her to go when she did, because things were becoming untenable.

However I feel I have really connected with you, Sam.
I know more about you in general terms and you have been both supportive to me and positive about your own situation.
You've been honest in every other way, and let's face it, four years behind the curtain shows commitment. I'd probably have wanted to jump out and shout "BOO" long before now.

Hey there new old-timer.

limey 10-14-2011 12:00 PM

I would like to add that I think Jim has come a long way, also. He's proof that a person can take a look around, see what he needs to do to improve and then actually carry those improvements out. Way to go LJ - er JimHelm! :cheerldr:

footfootfoot 10-14-2011 12:50 PM

wolf 10-14-2011 05:49 PM

Mari? No shit.

Never would have guessed. Completely clueless. Low flying airplane clueless.

And no avatars. They don't help. Just as soon as you get used to one, they get changed, and then there are all of those damned epileptic fit causing flashing ones, and ... it's just not good. We're not that kind of a forum. Encourages the wrong sort of nonthinking people that barely write in chatspeak.

ZenGum 10-14-2011 05:51 PM

Said she with the little wolf picture ... ;)

wolf 10-14-2011 05:55 PM

It's an emoticon, not an avatar, and don't you forget it.

infinite monkey 10-14-2011 06:00 PM

No avatars is the awesome. People can always put something on their profile. Back during a, um....(shhhhhhh) certain s-a-f-a-r-i time I remember how horribly annoying their site was. Ugh. You could barely read the comments through all the avatars and signatures and whatever else they had going on. Seizures is right! It was like Mary Hart's voice over there.

Banning gifs would eliminate the flashing ones. If you really wanted to be strict, you could only allow head and shoulder shots.

I know they would change from time to time, but I still think it would help me keep people straight.

I agree with this. I don't see how avatars encourages the wrong sort of non-thinking people. Avatars show individuality and it also dresses the board up a little so it doesn't look so boring. I've seen many forums over my years on the internet and this is one of the very few that doesn't allow them.

Of course this is just my opinion and I'm sure you're all thinking I should just shut the fuck up since I'm the newbie.

infinite monkey 10-17-2011 12:17 PM

If you want to put your pic up, you put it in your profile. If someone wants to see your pic, they look at your profile.

Because the profiles are there, I really don't see the point in 'avatars.'

Do we really need to tackify the place, like so many 'tattoos' (so we can express our individuality like everyone else?)

Profiles, people. Profiles.

Besides, I don't want to look at some of your mugs all the time.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to post a giant mind-blowing annoying signature. kthx.

Avatars are rarely someone's own picture.

infinite monkey 10-17-2011 12:20 PM

Yeah, they're like tattoos.

And didn't this whole thing come up because people thought they would recognize people more? So, which is it?

Meh, you've all been wanting me gone for a long time anyway. Avatar your face off, and have fun. Might I suggest sheep faces?

BrilliantDisguise 10-17-2011 12:21 PM

I've used avatars like this before...

http://avatarmaker.eu/free-avatars/a...x100_80862.jpg

infinite monkey 10-17-2011 12:23 PM

OHHHHH, yeah, I can see how Pete will recognize you from now on!

Whaaaaaaaaaaaa?

BrilliantDisguise 10-17-2011 12:25 PM

By "flagatars", are you talking about my 3 tiny little flags in my signature?

infinite monkey 10-17-2011 12:26 PM

It's a play on words. Flagatars, Avatars, Tattootars, sigtars...really, anything much more than a concise thought (ahh yes, thoughts) is annoying. Just mho.

But I DID love jimhelm's 10 or 12 flags in his signature he had over the weekend. Brilliant!

BrilliantDisguise 10-17-2011 12:29 PM

I thought Jim's flags were brilliant as well.;)

Let me ask you, do you just wear black and beige clothing?

infinite monkey 10-17-2011 12:32 PM

No, I often dress up in coats of many colors in real life.

Mostly, though, I use words and actions to express my individuality. I have that option.

Is your name Joseph? Do you interpret Pharoah's dreams?

Wow, I think that's Donnie Osmond playing Joseph.

BrilliantDisguise 10-17-2011 12:38 PM

I don't think an avatar would take away from someone using words to express their individuality here. But again, that's just my opinion. The consensus seems to be no avatars, so it's really a moot point.

Most other forums suck?

Yeah, that's it. Most other forums suck, and appeal to a lower common denominator.

BrilliantDisguise 10-17-2011 12:42 PM

OK, if you say so.

Pay me no mind.

monster 10-17-2011 01:00 PM

If you are really clever/bored, you can use text art in your Location to create an avatar.... maybe?

I had one on my old forum. I've grown used to not having one. I kinda like it now. Fortunately the posters I generally ignore have easily recognisable names.

monster 10-17-2011 01:01 PM

....and what is wrong with wearing all black?

monster 10-17-2011 01:02 PM

If this is a serious thing we're talking about, I wonder if it's possible to have the "sterile for work" view not include avatars? I'm not saying it's a deal breaker for me, but having avatars all over the screen is going to make discreet browsing from work more difficult.
