OK under the covers last night, but painful getting up in the morning.

18 (64) degrees in this room. I'm happy in a vest (wifebeater?) and jogging bottoms with bare feet. Mum & Dad are wrapped up downstairs in about three layers and socks. I'm making noises about heating bills to keep it off a bit longer...!

It's only down to 12 outside (53) anyway. Although it feels cooller than last week because the wind has more bite. Nevertheless I went walking in this outfit this morning and felt quite happy.

Are heating bills really a problem for them? If not, that just seems a little excessive to me. They're elderly and in their own home, and if they're feeling 18 is cold, they probably need the extra heat. Unless they really enjoy being bundled up. Maybe you could suggest putting the heating on but setting the thermostat a couple of degrees lower?

If you were merkinized, you wouldn't feel so cold.

Heating bills are a real issue here - in the UK in general, but the main issue is usually Mum & me vs Dad. When Mum is cold she will put on extra layers. She will also put clothes out on the line if it doesn't look like rain. DAD moans about the bills, but will sit in a tank top [US use] or t-shirt and complain about being cold. He will also put all clothes in the dryer for 60 mins on a sunny day; including No Tumble Dry and Mum's delicate tops.

The 'rents are entitled to feel comfortable in their old age. But as children in this very house we were taught to Put On More Clothes, Shut the Door Behind You, Switch the Light Off etc. They were in their 30s then, so of course things have changed, but I have lived The Frugal Life as far as energy is concerned for pretty much all my life, following the 'rents' original example - I've internalised it and am bound to parrot it back.

Tank top - that answers a puzzle. To us (Brits) a tank top is a jumper without sleeves. By which I mean a knitted item, as I think by jumper you understand pinafore?
A vest for us is an undergarment (a tank top with or without sleeves). Or occasionally an outer garment for women with small or spaghetti straps.

Never a waistcoat :)

It was chilly in the house this morning, but I was under a quilt, so I didn't mind. The weather's been beautiful here the past few weeks...I love fall!

The house was 66F this morning due to our wet, cold, miserable, sunless week. It is now 71F due to a beautiful sunfilled morning. :)

We are still in the mid 80's here, but you can tell fall is here as temps have gone down to 56 at night last week, but it always goes back up again.

Sometimes I wonder what language exactly you people speak over there.

Furnace on as of yesterday. I didn't even get it checked. Guess I'll be buying a carbon monoxide detector, just in case.

I have a gas furnace and a gas fireplace. For quick warm ups is the fireplace more energy efficient? It seems to warm up the place a goodly bit.

Shit! Running late for work... get to the car and everything is frosted over. WTH, I'm not ready for winter yet.

it depends on what you have. The older appliances are less efficient. Whichever of the two is newer is probably more efficient.

I haven't even had to put on a sweater in the morning yet. High 87 degrees today.

Bah! I am so, so tired of being hot all the time.

As for my furnace . . . I just flip the switch on my thermostat the other direction whenever I need it. :)

I think they are the same. I think then it doesn't matter.
We had some freezing temperatures a couple weeks ago.
My bill went up by 40 dollars. :eek: wow The furnace was constantly kicking on. When it is milder out like this weak it is not on at night. That said this place is much more energy efficient than the last place I was at. My energy bills here are 150% cheaper and that is both electric and gas combined. Even with a spikes in energy use I can expect to pay at least 100 dollars less per month than before.:D

Meanwhile, Downunda, spring is blossoming gloriously, and on the city streets, the denim and lycra of winter is being replaced by shorts of spring. Short shorts. Very short shorts, this year. :D Life is good.

Watching the neighbors cat crawl under a juniper to get out of the rain. Could turn to snow by tonight. I have been bundling up as much as I can in an effort to avoid turning on the furnace. It sounds like a locomotive when it runs and I hate to think what my utility bill will look like once it gets really cold. No thighs in my part of the world.
