PC alert!

I decided I don't like the name Orion much, because it's too much like "Ryan" -- a too-common name.

(speaking of red.... no image of the day of the tomato-squishing fest this year? I thought that was a UT tradition?)

Cloud 08-28-2009 04:30 PM

But, but . . . it's a reptile! Nature, fine: trees, stars, flowers. No crawly things, though.

monster 08-28-2009 04:36 PM

oh ok. *bottom lip trembles and sticks out a little*

but Tarantula would be a seriously AWESOME name, you have to admit.

Cloud 08-28-2009 05:08 PM

only if it was pronounced tar -an-toola (with a hard t) like the dance!

morethanpretty 08-28-2009 09:48 PM

Well seein as how I forgot about the 2nd child havin' not yet been determined, I will revise for them.
Names for the possible girl from the list I liked:

Aislinn - how is the pronounced? ahs-linn or ase-linn? I like the "ahs-linn" pronunciation. Suggest alt-spelling: Aislynn
Canyon - I like for a girl also
Crimson - Although I'm tempted to say this might be good for a girl, then I thought about when they get their cycles and what a bad name that would be...so no.
Delyth - def like for a girl
Echo - girl name - only echo i ever new was a scrawny slut
Iona - maybe, but sounds kinda old-lady to me
Mab/Maeve - Its old-lady
Cerulean - i like it
Eris - i like this one
Rio would be Ria for a girl, unless your usin' a different language than I am. It might be good for a girl, not as much of a chance of...troubles.
Tirso (family name) - that one is interesting, would it work for a girl?
Zuma - I love this name for a girl, and all the more so since i looked it up and it means "peace"

I would also like to submit Autumn for consideration. I don't know about "popular," "alternative" or all that. I simply think its a great name and season, and if the girl happens to be born at the right time...well its there.
Old-lady names I do like: Theola, Esther, Beulah. All grandma's of mine :).

I want to make these changes to my opinion of the boy names:

Auryn - no really, i want to know how to say this is. The spelling is interestin. The meaning is apparently "golden one" but i didn't find a pronounce. My guess would be like "Aaron" but more "Aar-en" or "Aar-in" perhaps "Air-yen". I don't know.
Xanthe - since i've been correct on how this is said, I now like it
Thea - although i've been corrected on how this is said, I still don't like it.
Dresdan - I've decided this name is more awesome, than just OK.

monster 08-28-2009 10:08 PM

Xanthe and Thea are girls' names ;)

Cloud 08-28-2009 11:54 PM

I think "or-in" for Auryn. I think there could be some good names in there; just trying to shake loose a shortlist.

BD#2 told me today: "Oh, but we're all going to change our last name anyway. Just as soon as we can think of something cool enough."

Oy.

monster 08-29-2009 11:01 AM

yeah we wanted to change ours but we couldn't decide so we opted for his.

Fuckin fuckity fuck, i just don't care anymore.

Cloud, how about Theodore? That name always makes me think a person is great. Unless they go by Ted.

Cloud 08-29-2009 11:17 PM

Everyone's comments are sincerely appreciated! Thanks.

diminished 08-30-2009 12:46 AM

A couple of years ago, I had a friend at work. One of those sweet swayable teenage girl-types who was expecting, but the father of said sprog didn't want to know.

I almost succeeded in convincing her to call her child 'Asbo' (if a boy) or 'Asbette' if a girl.In the end she ran with something else, but I felt mine were both valid choices.

(In the UK, ASBO='Anti Social Behaviour Order' :D )

DucksNuts 08-30-2009 03:53 AM

I love the name Gaius: though he'd be likely to hate it as a child (too close to gay) he'd probably appreciate it as an adult.

Cloud 09-01-2009 08:27 AM

Just for the record, I didn't add it to the list--BD#2 did.

So . . . I get to stay? please? (puppy dog eyes)

monster 09-01-2009 09:28 AM

I think you should add Tomatina to the list :)

Shawnee123 09-01-2009 10:00 AM

Thomasina!

Dana, is that pronounced Gay - us? If so - please see post #86 repeatedly :P

Cloud 09-01-2009 12:58 PM

It's pronounced Guy-us! A real "guy" name, ha!

xoxoxoBruce 09-01-2009 01:01 PM

It makes no difference how it's supposed to be pronounced when he's stuffed in a locker. UT is right on the money.:eyebrow:

classicman 09-01-2009 01:01 PM

ok thats it - Cloud, you too need to reread #86. Fuggit - I'm callin your daughters :P

wolf 09-01-2009 01:03 PM

For the love of whatever gods you honor, please, no Jayden or Aiden or any sort of stupid home-made names (anything involving apostrophes or a Q without a U). Also no normal names with fucked up spellings (Jennphr). For a girl no Crystal, Heather, Tiffany, or Brittany.

I have noticed that two things tend to screw people up in subtle ways ... dumb names and birthdays too close to holidays. Friend of mine's kind is named Krysta, born on Christmas Eve. She's doomed.

Cloud 09-01-2009 01:05 PM

you're gonna stuff my grandson in a locker? Fie! I say.

pshaw, even.

Cloud 09-01-2009 01:06 PM

Hey! My little granddaughter Jayden is not fucked up. She's cute, the name fits her, and it's getting pretty popular.

so, double fie!

classicman 09-01-2009 01:06 PM

Then again, he could end up with a name like Anvil or Rock ... :bolt:

Except that the husband of BD#1, for the longest time, wanted to name the prospective baby boy. . . wait for it . . .

Falion!

I had to exercise my semi-veto power on that one. (Valium? Phallus? Prince Valiant?) Fortunately, he kept getting girls . . . and has grown out of it for this one.

Phew!

My mum had to fight my dad over my bro's name :P He wanted to call him Zebediah. I have no idea why. Mum wanted Simon.

he ended up a Martin :)

[eta] I hated my name as a kid. 'Danielle' just sounded too round and clumsy to me. The fact that I also have two middle names didn;t help matters. Also, it was a rare name when i was growing up; hadn't become as common as it now is. Any unusual name is the kiss of death if you're being bullied. Now I rather like it ... the name, not the being bullied:P

classicman 09-01-2009 04:59 PM

I think its a beautiful name - Same as my first daughter.

ZenGum 09-01-2009 09:47 PM

Wait, Dana is Classic's daughter????

classicman 09-02-2009 12:30 PM

I'm not THAT old!

Shawnee123 09-02-2009 12:35 PM

My dad wanted to name me Keitha.

Mom was like "Uhhh... yeah. No."

Pie 09-02-2009 01:00 PM

Apparently they were so sure I was going to be a girl that they never even picked out any boy-names.

<singing>I'm a boy, I'm a boy, but my Mom won't admit it</thewho>

morethanpretty 09-02-2009 08:45 PM

My mom was so sure I was gonna be a boy that she never picked out girl names, my dad disagreed with her so he got to name me.

kerosene 09-02-2009 08:59 PM

I have always disliked my name. Not feminine enough to make it obvious I am a girl...not masculine enough to win me job interviews. My husband's name is also androgynous. I wish people wouldn't name girls with "boy" names, though. It really messed with my concept of femininity.

Cloud 09-02-2009 09:06 PM

I also have an ambiguous first name. I get a lot of mail addressed to "Mr. Lee . . . "

Fail! But I'm pretty girly nevertheless.

monster 09-02-2009 09:37 PM

Mine's obviously girly

So it's clear we need to name our children with something fitting the total opposite or what we hope they will become. i.e. what we dread.... White Republicans in Texas should consider the names "Barack", "Jervais" and "Indira"........

:bolt:

DucksNuts 09-03-2009 05:13 AM

Mine's seriously poshly girly ....two big dooh doooohs there.

Mum decided it was her turn to name the baby come hell or high water with me, but Dad refused to call me by my official name. Hence why I am known by my first name and my second.

It makes things very confusing at times.

xoxoxoBruce 09-03-2009 11:12 AM

You mean some call you Duck, and others just call you Nuts? :lol2:

jinx 09-03-2009 11:23 AM

Mine's girly now but didn't become so until Steel Magnolias came out. Prior to that it was boyish. There were 7 Jennifers in my first grade class, I was just happy not to be one of them.

Clodfobble 09-03-2009 11:45 AM

Fuckin' A, jinx.

And I escaped it for awhile, being in the corporate world with a mix of ages and genders... but now I'm associating almost exclusively with other mothers my age, so it's back to being surrounded by freaking Jennifers again.

kerosene 09-03-2009 02:05 PM

Yeah, I was glad not to be of the Jennifer clan. Now I know 3 of them whose kids go to school with mine.

Shawnee123 09-03-2009 08:39 PM

Aubrey Jean!

xoxoxoBruce 09-03-2009 11:56 PM

Mary Lynn, can go by Mary, Lynn, or Marylynn.

Wickedly_Tasteful 09-13-2009 11:37 PM

Silas is a good boys name

KinkyVixen 09-14-2009 12:50 AM

why the fuck are you givin out my names?

monster 09-14-2009 07:00 AM

erm, welcome back? Who's giving out your names? and is your reappearance linked to that of Wickedly_Tasteful?

Wickedly_Tasteful 09-14-2009 10:53 AM
