No, those who have established some sort of relationship with others that goes beyond barely disguised trolling. Trolls, not ever really part of the community, are usually taken out back and shot, unless they're really good at intimidating others into silent submission or selective ass-kissing of all the right people (who, suprisingly, sometimes fall for the ruse.)

Sundae 02-23-2009 11:42 AM

I agree.
But much as I love you, we probably have very different people in mind ;)

Still, that's what makes a forum, not a circle-jerk.
And this one is the best, after all.

fargon 02-23-2009 05:13 PM

This is the BEST DAMN FORUM ON THE WEB!!! I can't believe I've been here 3 years already. I spend most of my time online here, I have made friends. I've been pissed off, and entertained, laughed, and cried. This really the best forum on the web.

Elspode 02-23-2009 07:49 PM

I've gotten everything I could possibly want from this forum, except for sex.

I am ever hopeful.

lumberjim 02-23-2009 07:52 PM

wanking counts, d00d

Bullitt 02-24-2009 10:30 AM

This is the best one I've found. Good mix of friendly banter, some smarts, interesting conversation, a dash of tension, and a few incidences of random craziness like the thisisnotporn and AG member influxes. The lack of obnoxious 14 year olds is a plus too, I get enough that from xbox live.

I'll admit...I've been cheating on the Cellar with PD...but only for their art section! I swear! (No really, they've got some really talented people posting over there, their "Bring and Brag" seems more active than our "Creative Expression")

Srsly though, I'm sure the Cellar will always be my favorite forum...but I'm also sure I'll always be lurking other places. For some reason no other forums hold my interest for long enough to stick around and post.

DanaC 02-24-2009 11:42 AM

Creative Expression seems to have spates of activity then longish lulls. At some point someone will take it upon themselves to throw something in there and there will probably be a little flurry of action. Mostly I think our creative expression just kind of spills into the different sections.

Kaliayev 02-24-2009 12:06 PM

I could throw up some stuff in your creative section...I've got plenty of odds and ends on my hard drive I could share.

But then that is often the nature of creative expression, that its unpredictable and has stops and starts. With me, at least.

Yeah you got it. I thought you might though.

I'm no good at photoshop however, I must admit. Its something I've been meaning to do, but I've got so many other things on my plate... I'll be certain to check the thread out, thanks.

It's even funnier in context. The context starts at post 30.

DanaC 02-24-2009 01:02 PM

Whatever happened to Catwoman?

glatt 02-24-2009 01:04 PM

And just for kicks, I Googled Rich. He's been in the news since then.

Catwoman just stopped coming.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again -

The Cellar: This is the most honest, caring relationship we've ever been in.

it's because we haven't been giving as much as we are taking. We need to make more of the threads we like to read if we want it to be 'the cellar the way we like it' ™

look for a new thread pledge drive in the near future.

Jill 03-07-2009 06:56 PM

I'm a refugee from a similar message board community that I've participated in for 9+ years. The little bit of lurking I've done makes me think you guys have a similar community with a similar vibe. I'm looking forward to participating and getting to know the folks here.

So since I'm a brand spankin' noob here, ask me again in 9 years and maybe I'll vote this the best forum on the internet. For the moment, it seems pretty cool to me, though. :)

xoxoxoBruce 03-07-2009 10:41 PM

Welcome to the Cellar, Jill. :D

morethanpretty 03-07-2009 10:57 PM

Welcome Jill, hope you stick around and enjoy us for 9yrs. I'll be sure to ask at that time then.

monster 03-07-2009 11:03 PM

hi Jill

...what happened to make you a refugee?

Jill 03-07-2009 11:39 PM

Hi, and thanks for the welcome, xoxoxoBruce, morethanpretty & monster!

To answer your question, monster, the Big Boss Administrator, who has taken a back seat approach to Administration for the past 10 years, suddenly decided to be more hands-on, and in doing so, enacted some new rules that really, really sent the community into a tizzy. When we tried to explain to him why these changes would fundamentally alter the atmosphere throughout all the forums, he basically said he didn't care one whit how we felt, and even if he was making the biggest mistake of his career, so be it, he'd go find a job at McDonald's or Starbucks if his bosses weren't happy with it. Oh, and by the way, if we didn't like it, "[we'd] save [him] a lot of trouble if [we] go somewhere else."

So about 1,000 of us did. I know this because that's the number of people who have registered at 2 new boards that have been created by unhappy, long-term members (it's actually more than that, but there is some overlap in membership).

Interestingly enough, I just checked back there because I'm still getting Private Messages from friends, and found he had posted a personal apology to ME! Wow. I'm kind of stunned.

xoxoxoBruce 03-08-2009 03:53 AM

He just wants to get in your pants. ;)

limey 03-08-2009 04:15 AM

pssssssst watch out Jill, so does xoB!
Welcome Jill!

DanaC 03-08-2009 05:17 AM

Biggest mistake of his career? Was it a paying job then?

Nice to meet you Jill :)

Sundae 03-08-2009 06:58 AM

Welcome Jill [yes I am trying to dispel the myth that we are wary of noobs, but it's still a welcome so hey-ho]

You know what?
I was reading back through the Aylesbury thread I made.
Quite often I go there just to check what I have already taken pictures of. Before going out and possibly duplicating them. But a proper read shows so much appreciation and interest.

I'm used to that for other Dwellars. I've posted it myself. But to have it in a thread that I have created and I maintain - wow, it's wonderful. And it makes me appreciate - more than ever - what UT does here. And Bruce and Wolf of course.

Jill, you seem like a spunky kinda gal (in the Australian meaning). If you like it here, do ask your friends in too. We like intelligent posters. And indecent ones.

Don't be so sure you're wrong. :) As a matter of fact, he does know a lot of very personal things about me because many years ago I responded to a survey for an article he was writing. Hmmmmm. . . ;)

Yes. The message boards sprung (and grew) from discussions related to a column he's been writing for more than 30 years.

Nice to meet you, too, Dana!

Thanks, Sundae Girl!

I have mentioned this place to a few friends, but our old board is in so much chaos right now, with not one but two spin-off boards people are going to, I'm not sure how many (if any) I'd be successful coaxing over here. I suspect that at least one of them already belongs here, as it was actually a poster from our forums who listed this site in a thread where someone asked about other message boards that might have the same feel with intelligent and smart-assed posters that isn't filled with l33t and "I know you are but what am I?" type posts.

And a lot more will see a link to here I included in the post that the administrator responded to with his apology. I highlighted some of the more pertinent lines from the FAQs here, as well as the fact that y'all have existed for more than 10 years with only 3 common-sense rules. So perhaps it will please you that your board may have played some role in our board receiving an apology that many have been clamoring for. Go You!

DanaC 03-08-2009 11:52 AM

Almost 20 years now. 2010 sees the 20th year for the cellar (though I believe that includes its earlier BB incarnation).
