the man said, a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines

i say: a foolish adherence to convention is the disease of small persons mostly found in meaningless (though amusing) on-line forums and other such disasters

and: queen, there was no offense perceived...i didn't even unsheathe my sword

;)

classicman 04-13-2009 03:38 PM

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((yup))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

That would be really, REALLY annoying

henry quirk 04-13-2009 03:51 PM

yes it would be

this ((( ))) is what it is...why do some insist on elevating it or expanding it to something it's not?

perhaps i ought to start tallying all the spelling errors that crop up among the posts and harp on the guilty to shape up

would this be acceptable?

or perhaps i can keep a running and public count of inanities as they crop up and admonish the guilty to 'deepen' themselves

would this be acceptable?

i'm certain i would be told to look to content wit5h a kind eye and ignore stylistic eccentricity or sin and personality flaws

why, then, am i targeted because of ((( )))?

easier, i think, to frown on ((( ))) than to counter what's inside ((( )))

*shrug*

classicman 04-13-2009 03:56 PM

You are not trying to change the subject are you? Whew!

henry quirk 04-13-2009 04:03 PM

no, queenie did that with her small comment... ;)

i'm just following the flow of the conversation where it takes me...

the 'unbook', it seems to me, is very much about castration, the elimination of vision, and the reduction of 'one' to mere part in a looming, overarching, process (never mind the 'one' is the creator without who there would be no process).

in short: the 'unbook' is about 'feminizing', emasculating, and 'it takes a village-ism'.

the unbook -- at heart -- is an exercise in *collectivism which the sensible understand is the ruination of any real endeavor.

any real progress in any field occurs because 'one' exercises him 'self' alone, or as undisputed leader.

You have coded collectivism and subsuming of the self into a wider whole as female. You have coded decisive action and vision as male.

This is 18th century gender construction. In Rouseau this is forgivable. In a 21st century man it is pure and misguided misogyny.

For the record: I was not hurt. *smiles* silly boy. I am not so easily wounded. I am however, fascinated (in a slightly sick way) with your views. I really haven't come across anything like that for some time. Certainly not outside of my research.

I was a little surprised when you launched so quickly into personal insults. Not hurt, you understand, merely taken aback. I had misjudged you. *shrugs* it happens.

On this business about emotional investment in ghosts on the screen. Mmm. I dont get angry much in here (and certainly you havent provoked anger from me. There'd have been far more swearing involved, you'll know when I am mad.) but I do emotionally invest. I have friends here, real friends. They matter. What they think matters to me. And I like to flatter myself that what I think might matter to them. This is a community.

@ Cic. oh you scamp you :P

henry quirk 04-14-2009 10:01 AM

"I would still like the above questions answered"

i'm sure you would, sugah...

-----

"You have coded collectivism and subsuming of the self into a wider whole as female. You have coded decisive action and vision as male"

change 'coded' to 'observed' or 'perceived'...then you'd be bull's eye, dana

"In a 21st century man it is pure and misguided misogyny"

who am i to disagree?

misogynist i am then...

by the way: i think you protest a little too much, dana, proclaim your ease and peace a little too much

*shrug*

*Shrugs* no. I'm just quite a calm person. I wouldn't expect you to know that about me though. So it's an understandable conclusion to reach.

sugarpop 04-14-2009 03:06 PM

Still no answer. All righty then.

ftr, I was not taking sides with anyone. I simply relayed to someone a similar experience that had happened to me elsewhere, and questioned something you said, because I was interested in how you came to that conclusion. But oh well.

henry quirk 04-14-2009 03:25 PM

sugarpop:

i could 'give' you an answer but i think you might find it unsatisfying

it would better if i could play a game of 20 questions

by way of the give and take i'm certain my reasons for viewing academia as a con, and shelter for the timid, could be illustrated

so: any takers?

any entrenched academics wiling to submit to 20 questions?

i promise to keep my misanthropy in check...HA!

if anyone is interested in playing, let me know...i'll start a new thread and we can proceed... --henry

DanaC 04-14-2009 03:41 PM

OK. I'll bite. Why is academia a con and a shelter for the timid? And yes, I'll play your 20 questions.

henry quirk 04-14-2009 03:51 PM

very good!

a brave soul!

bear with me, dana...this afternoon is shot for me as far as 'thinking' and tomorrow is full to overflowing with business

so: may we begin thursday?

if yes: i'll open a thread and ask the first question

your answer to that question will, of course, inform and lead to the next question, and so forth and so on

again: i promise to keep my misanthropy in check for the duration

assuming you agree: this should be fun

i should point to the vultures looking to see me hoisted on my own spear: it's entirely possible dana may prove me wrong, or, provide me with inadequate 'evidence' to support my view...*shrug*...such is the nature of going out on a limb… --henry

DanaC 04-14-2009 03:54 PM

*smiles* sounds good to me. tho, I can't guarantee I'll answer instantly. I'm likewise a bit snowed under just now. Am in middle of writing my dissertation (shouldnt be here now in fact lol) and am down to days now, not weeks.

I daresay I'll find a little time to check in here tho:P

henry quirk 04-14-2009 04:00 PM

good enough!

i think for the bit of chess ahead: it's good we -- you and me -- take our time

i don't expect you to whiz through the questions...certainly: i intend to take my time in formulating them

so: 'till thursday...

DanaC 04-14-2009 04:01 PM

*grins* Indeed sirrah, 'til Thursday.

classicman 04-14-2009 04:06 PM

Get you paper done woman! Then you can play your game.

henry quirk 04-14-2009 04:13 PM

to the vultures: why i would take my time in formulating the questions when i am so certain of my view?

because: dana, in kindly submitting to the game, has essentially entered into a contract with me to offer honest answers to an honest inquiry...couple this with my promise to avoid obvious expressions of my misanthropy, and you have a structure and stricture through which i willingly tie one hand behind my back

moreover: to fully illustrate my point, i need dana to be at ease with the inquiry...this means tailoring questions to suit 'her' and not some generic target

anyway: i hope you vultures are sufficiently cowed and informed that, come thursday, you'll let dana and me get to the game while you all play witness to, not participant in, the proceedings... -henry

sugarpop 04-16-2009 12:30 AM

Looking forward to it Henry. Dana, you go girl.
