I liked this one. I've heard of Cake, but didn't know what they sing. This was good.

Velvet Revolver - Slither

We do this live and it's one of my favs to play. I play it pretty much on one string and fly around on the neck, make it real showy.

This is a live performance by Pulp. The lyrics are easier to get on the produced version but the electricity of Cocker's performance comes through better on live. This is I think a later performance because the violin seems to have been replaced by a guitar, but the only early concerts I could find were at glastonbury and the sound quality is always a bit dodgy on the glastonbury sets.

Here goes:

[eta] bah....didn't work. try again

[eta] yey!

[another edit...just in case you can't make out the lyrics past the Sheffield accent: here they are :P

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge,
she studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College,
that's where I,
caught her eye.
She told me that her Dad was loaded,
I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola."
She said "Fine."
and in thirty seconds time she said,

"I want to live like common people,
I want to do whatever common people do,
I want to sleep with common people,
I want to sleep with common people,
like you."

Well what else could I do -
I said "I'll see what I can do."
I took her to a supermarket,
I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere,
so it started there.
I said pretend you've got no money,
she just laughed and said,
"Oh you're so funny."
I said "yeah?
Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here.
Are you sure you want to live like common people,
you want to see whatever common people see,
you want to sleep with common people,
you want to sleep with common people,
like me."
But she didn't understand,
she just smiled and held my hand.
Rent a flat above a shop,
cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags and play some pool,
pretend you never went to school.
But still you'll never get it right,
cos when you're laid in bed at night,
watching roaches climb the wall,
if you call your Dad he could stop it all.

You'll never live like common people,
you'll never do what common people do,
you'll never fail like common people,
you'll never watch your life slide out of view,
and dance and drink and screw,
because there's nothing else to do.

Sing along with the common people,
sing along and it might just get you through,
laugh along with the common people,
laugh along even though they're laughing at you,
and the stupid things that you do.
Because you think that poor is cool.

I want to live with common people,
I want to live with common people etc...

ok...that's a bad song. and what's more...it's a horrible version of it. if it had been tolerable to listen to, i may have left it....but the sound quality was so godawful....it has to go. sorry dana.

lumberjim 01-18-2008 10:00 PM

janes addiction from way back in 87. the first half is rock n roll.....which is OK, but at about 4:15 it becomes 'Sympathy' , a cover of the stones' 'sympathy for the devil' but like 5 times better than the strolling bones do it.

lumberjim 01-20-2008 09:48 PM

lumberjim 01-21-2008 01:00 PM

I like big yellow taxi......7 there...

but the symphony......not really diggin it,....i dont know if it cuz the audio file is out of sync with the video...or? I'd like steve dallas's opinion in this one.

and the punk song had my toe tapping, but it was a little annoying while im at work....I'll leave it there for now.......with a 4.

regular.joe 01-21-2008 08:03 PM

Yea, the sync was pretty bad. I liked the music though.

What the hell do these guys even do? Wave their arms around while other people play the music?

Now I realize that's pretty much what I do, but that's different. I'm making a sound, that the audience can hear, while I make stupid faces.

But seriously, what are these guys there for? To control the tempo? What, do they do it different every time? Tempo can be written in sheet music. It's not like shitty musicians with bad time are going to play better just because some guy is jumping around pretending to be bugs bunny. I mean, I'm sure these are top-notch players, just have them chart out how the damn song goes, and get that jackass off the stage.

regular.joe 01-22-2008 10:37 PM

I see your point. He's the driver.

The flute player only has to know his part, the cello 1st chair his part. The guy waving his arms like that knows everyones part as well as the guy playing it at any given time. For a piece like Beethovens 9th, I'd say that is pretty impressive. So...with the philharmonic it's like driving a Cadillac...but still he's the driver.

As for musical genius, I was referring to Beethoven.
