They don't get stung, or does it not hurt them? Eeeek, that's my astrological sign but I don't think I want to meet one!

HungLikeJesus 12-13-2007 01:49 PM

Your astrological sign is a kitten?

lookout123 12-13-2007 01:49 PM

i don't know which it is. but cats move so damn fast it is amazing. they'll just circle the scorpion and before you even realize the cat is moving it has slapped the scorpion a couple feet across teh ground. they just keep doing until the little bugger is dead.

Scorpion? Are we sure that's not a crawfish in the "nice to meets you" picture?

I think he was kidding - that is definitely a crawdaddy.

Shawnee123 12-14-2007 07:38 AM

Googled "scorpion or crayfish" and there are numerous hits about people trying to discern the two.

How are you so sure, classicman?

btw...we call them crawdads, too. :)

Ibby 12-14-2007 09:46 AM

and when there wuz no crawdads... we ate sand.
you ate what?
we ate sand.
you ate sand?

Shawnee123 12-14-2007 09:48 AM

Crawdads (crayfish) have a fan shaped tail, like the one in the picture, whereas scorpions have their famous stinger.

Crawfish have a tail section built for swimming, much like a lobster, since they live primarily in the water. Scorpions, however, are built for movement on land since that is where they reside. Their tail section curves upward and has a barb on the end which is their primary weapon. Links with pics available below.

lookout123 12-14-2007 11:01 AM

not all scorpion tails curve up. some curve to the side. whether that side is right or left is an issue for their tailor.

Drax 12-14-2007 11:51 AM

Ok, people. Back on topic:

To me that tail looked much more Scorpion-like. Eh...[/inability to drop it]

jester 12-14-2007 01:43 PM

Since it's not being totally dropped - I, unfortunately have "several" crawdad holes in my back yard. After a good rain, those little suckers dig up more mud - it's a crawdad

Clodfobble 12-14-2007 02:06 PM

In college, it was part of the common backyard-crawdad-boil party ritual that you entertain yourselves with crawdad races before actually cooking them. If a particular gladiator was very successful, he might even be spared from being dinner.

It's folded under it's body. But the head is another indicator that it's a crayfish.

Go to the links - and look at the pics side by side - you'll see.

lookout123 12-14-2007 03:32 PM

it's absolutely a crayfish. but thanks for spending the day dwelling on it.

Undertoad 12-14-2007 03:51 PM

crawfish vs cat

i might have posted this before? no big payoff, but it's interesting to see how they interact.

cat: what the? it's not *much* food but it definitely is food. Not really enough food to bother with if I'm gonna get pinched, though...

crawdad: I'm HUGE!! Fuck you, I'M HUGE!!!

Sundae 12-14-2007 04:03 PM

Oh that's another point in my favour re carbon selling. Our rivers are being over-run with American Crayfish, they are wiping out the British Crayfish by being harder and meaner and tougher and bigger. I will endeavour to eat as many crayfish as possible :)

My boys woulda had that crayfish walloped in a minute. That cat is just curious, not hunting.

I wasn't actually searching for it, but I've just stumbled across a video of a domestic cat Vs a scorpion.

Here: http://www.nothingtoxic.com/media/11..._its_Territory

I don't know if this can be embedded or not, but I do know that I don't know how to do it if it can. Clear?
