Like any thread started by a Dweller is no longer owned by that Dweller. Sorry folks, but I still consider any thread I've started here to be my own.

lumberjim 11-07-2007 02:55 PM

a thread is only yours if you can take it away and go home.

yes, that is one example. Also much more tolerance here for abuse to posters, use of others' images; no avatar, not as much sex or flirting as some other places, a strange . . . er, unique attitude toward serious/non-serious posts, etc., etc., etc.

Not bad, per se, just different, like I said. I think because the Cellar has been around for such a long time, it has evolved its own unique customs.

in 20 years, are we all still going to be sitting around our computers talking to each other?

I think the word you are looking for is "superior." The Cellar is superior. That's why you are here. If the Cellar was simply "bad" or "different," you wouldn't be here.

if we are, bruce will have 117,100 posts

Well, as you probably remember, I was against the "no avatar" policy at first, but I quickly got used to, and eventually grew to like it this way. No thinking about which avatar to use.

If you are chatting with friends, and the subject wanders, do you chastize them for ruining your conversation?

That's the key to all the differences here, for those of you who still haven't realized it. Anonymity on the internet makes people into assholes. This place does everything it can to make you not anonymous. I'll readily admit, I don't much care or remember what a dwellar says until I have enough background information to connect it to a real person in my head. Doesn't have to be overly personal information, just interests, or mannerisms, or anything that makes someone unique.

Threads here are not messageboard threads, they are conversations. This is why people get irritated when others go off on meaningless chats--because it cannot possibly involve anyone else. It would be rude if it were in person. It is also why some teasing and meanness is more tolerated than in other places--because when you are close to someone, friend or enemy, you can say things you wouldn't say to a stranger on the street. Regular messageboards are for strangers on the street. Avatars are for posters who don't know each other well enough so they need a picture to help identify them. This place is a community.

that's why it's so perfect for me...

I am free to be made into an asshole through my own words and actions.

I used to be funnier, really. this had real potential....and i can still taste it...i just don't think i really nailed it this time. sigh...

Before I got into the Cellar the only message boards I used to frequent were game related (Battle Vortex or guild forums). I was kind of used to avatars but didn't tend to use 'em myself. I got out of gaming shortly before I started posting on here and stopped going on the game forums. About four months ago I started going on a couple of 'Politics' forums and a history forum. They all use avatars and I find them deeply distracting. They make the boards messy, and the screen confusing. I much prefer the simple aesthetics of the Cellar.

I also found their overuse of rules and moderation a little off putting. Threads that started out a one thing weren't allowed to just drift. If they drift the moderator jumps in and moves the threaddrift to a different section of the message board. There are hard and fast rules about what kinds of things you can post. So...if someone makes a point and somebody else posts an "I hear you" or "lol" that is considered unacceptable.

To me that spoils the flow of conversation. It's the difference between sitting around a table in a pub with mates and discussing everything under the sun...and sitting in a meeting with colleagues and discussing what is set on the agenda.

Ew.

Makes me wanna say Yay Undertoad!

:thankyou:

Question: do html tags work in the sig line? Like, say, pic links?

I'm just sayin', for those who are interested in avatars, well...

lumberjim 11-07-2007 06:05 PM

I have a membership on a Jeep Commander forum. It's lousy with avatars and sigs with pictures....

I started a little shit when i expressed my opinion that they were annoying...they pointed out the ability to 'not see' them in the control panel....and all was well again.

Aliantha 11-07-2007 06:24 PM

avatars and pictures just make pages load slower etc. I think it's better without them.

Ibby 11-07-2007 07:38 PM

No.

Aliantha 11-07-2007 07:44 PM

yes

Razzmatazz13 11-07-2007 07:52 PM

For those curious...this forum is just about the complete opposite of the cellar in every possible way.

(Careful, you may lose some IQ points by checking out that link ;) )

To give you a general idea, I've had an account there a little longer than I have here, and I've made maybe 10 posts over there, because there's such a high likelihood of being flamed when you post (whether you're new or not, though being new makes it about 10x worse.)

They don't allow thread drift, "circlejerking" (posting just to say "right on!" or "I agree"),or one-word / single-smiely posts ("lol"/ ":eyebrow: ").

No

I wanted to put something weird and unobtrusive in when I was having a *drought*, well actually, it was self inflicted, so more like water restrictions

Mega- Thread drift around here is an understatement.

Shawnee123 11-08-2007 08:32 AM

Razz, a quote from that website in the "games" threads from the moderator about using good grammar:

Like I said, I'm not going to be going nuts with it but please use reasonable grammar and punctuation here

Post nazi much? Yep, way different than the Cellar, thank god! :) Wow!

Mockingbird 11-08-2007 08:43 AM

I've been to a ton a forums like that. SomethingAwful was one of them that I got tied up in. They had a sub-forum there called FYAD (standing for 'fuck you and die') where it was basically a bunch of folks posting non-sequitors and maintaining a strange class structure where if you didn't 'get' all the weird random shit flying around you were ostracized. Man, that intrigued the hell out of me. I spent two years on and off integrating myself into it and becoming an accepted member but I kinda stopping going when it stopped being a game and I wasn't getting anything out of it.

Here at least I can get some intelligent conversation. I might get into a flame war too if one crops up. I think I'm getting a bit rusty :D

Actually the biggest reason for *that* sort of post nazi-ing on that board is because the users are the total opposite of the cellar as well. It attracts a TON of illiterate 11-13 year olds who use l337 sp34k and are generally impossible to understand, so maybe picking on them wasn't very nice....but I *DID* say it was the anti-cellar there. :D

However, you can get a temp ban there for not capitalizing your sentences, not using periods, using too many elipsis (...) or AOLisms (lol, lmao, wtf, omg, etc.).

*peeks out at the rest of the internet...*

Did I mention that I love you guys? :grouphug:

Shawnee123 11-08-2007 03:06 PM

Ahhh, I can see about the leetspeak or whatever it's called, but I certainly wouldn't expect any mods here to start calling people out for not capitalizing, etc. That's for assholes like ME to point out.

Thanks CyberSundae! :)

Meanwhile, over at the New Scientist web page, a story about super-high energy cosmic rays being detected from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) produced the following comment exchange:

Quote:

'Nuclei' is plural, ergo there are no such thing as AGNs.

By Pelotard
Fri Nov 09 00:20:34 GMT 2007
"There are no such thing" is grammatically incorrect, so we can disregard your post.
Sorry, but you asked for it :)
If you're going to be a grammar fascist, you have to be perfect.

See, threads don't need moving, they're quite capable of locomotion without assistance.

Go on, I dare ya to accuse me of being insensitive to the needs of disabled threads......

If the thread were on a treadmill that was going at the same speed as the wheels of the thread would the thread continue moving and take off?

(I just saw on that forum on Razz's link that someone got a warning because "&" is not a word. For crying out loud. Yet, I can't look away.)

Razzmatazz13 11-09-2007 02:29 PM

Ha! Glad to have provided you with some entertainment...it's really nice to go over there when the cellar is being slow and watch them all devour each other's carcases. :corn:

Shawnee123 11-09-2007 02:31 PM

It's hilarious! I'm almost tempted to sign up and not be overtly obnoxious, you know just be my usual obnoxious self, and see how long it takes before I get called on the carpet.

It's like the Romper Room of teh Internetz.

monster 11-09-2007 09:13 PM

That forum's a hoot, Razz, they can't even agree on the ridiculous rules!

Sundae 11-10-2007 02:30 PM

When I was 15 and worked at Deep Pan Pizza there was a pizza called, "Tell 'Em Phil Sent Ya" The amount of times I was asked to explain that title. Sigh.

monster 11-10-2007 07:35 PM

and what was the explanation?

:D

Sundae 11-11-2007 05:16 AM

"It's sort of a special pizza, because it has so many toppings. Like if you were special, you know, like someone had said to mention their name and you get a special deal thing."

Well, I was fifteen!

Shawnee123 11-13-2007 08:03 AM

Too hilarious. I've finally found my new user title.

classicman 05-04-2009 10:44 PM

Bump...

Expedition anyone?

Beestie 05-05-2009 03:15 AM

God - I just wasted ten minutes reading this entire thread. Again.

capnhowdy 05-05-2009 06:50 AM

So drax = datalyss?

If you're banned you can just change your name and come back?

monster 05-05-2009 07:11 AM

be careful what you wish for....

I don't think he's really banned (is he?) he's an attention whore and that's one of his "tricks". he wants to be banned because that means someone is actually bothered enough by him. Or maybe he finally got his wish. Who knows (or cares) he's the original "boy who cried wolf". But he'll probably be back

capnhowdy 05-05-2009 07:29 AM

I just noticed in this thread his 'drax' posts user title said banned. None of my business anyway. I'm always wondering about something. Always.

Undertoad 05-05-2009 07:43 AM

He requested banning

monster 05-05-2009 08:38 AM

Oh dear, perhaps we should have noticed

classicman 05-05-2009 08:53 AM

Forget the draxer! I was thinkin a spring expedition to that site razz found could be fun.

Dracks 05-05-2009 09:38 AM

What?

Razzmatazz13 05-09-2009 10:52 PM

I found a site??

Edit: Oh, that site.
