Sorry for the delay -- I was out of town without Internet access. Actually, I haven't read any of her books. I know, it's criminal. I don't actually speak Telugu, only English. She has never authorized English translations of her works, though they have been translated to a variety of other languages. I believe she has published 22 novels, along with several books of short stories.

She is a celebrity; she routinely is honored for her work. She got an honarary Ph.D. from Andhra University; not bad for a woman who had to drop out of the fourth grade (because she was married, at the age of nine!) Sometimes, when I look at her life and compare it with what I've done with my own, I hang my head in shame.

lol..trust me, the only reason I remember it is because he's famous. The funny thing is, I had no idea who he was till my mate told me he was an actor (this was in the taxi on the way to his place). I thought he was just some dude in a pub. He had a nice house though...and a very cute house mate.

I've seen a few famous people around town etc. but nothing too interesting to tell. Mostly newscasters and politicians.

My wife had a good one, but the story is better when spoken.

She had just boarded a plane, and stood in the aisle putting her bag away, when she heard Darth Vader behind her say "excuse me." She stepped aside to let a smiling James Earl Jones go by.

Comfort Food

It was 1988. I was checking out with my groceries at the Stop & Shop on Harvard Avenue in Brookline, MA. I grabbed my bags and started heading for the door when out of the corner of my eye I saw that some dude was about to crash into me. He clearly wasn't looking where he was going, so I blurted out "Hey! Watch it!"

It was Michael Dukakis. He had a bag with one pint of Ben & Jerry's. He had lost the election about two days previous. I felt bad because I had voted for him and here I was being kinda rude.:sniff:
