Another aspect is how much of a power browser you are. Like many people, I find the best approach is to hit New Posts, then open a new tab (Firefox) for each thread.

I don't know that there are any ... after all, you guys make MUCH better beer (even your bad beer is quite tasty by American Standards*) and you can drink us under the table.

I've been to quite a few conferences with Australians, so I know this from experience.

* American Beer is like making love in a canoe ... fucking close to water

Opening a new tab is a good idea.

I sometimes hit "new posts" and then get interrupted before I can read them all. Then when I come back, my browser can't tell me what I've already read, and what I haven't. I miss posts that way, or end up re-reading old ones until I find my place.

Which is why I don't use "new posts". I lost track too many times.

TMI warning: Thread reading strategy

I use Mozilla Firefox, and the tabbed browsing is great. One of the tabs on my homepage is the cellar, specifically I use http://www.cellar.org/search.php?do=getdaily (which I also have saved as a bookmark/favorite) as the url for the homepage. When I launch the browser, the tabs open to the pages, including the cellar. When I see all the bold links indicating a new post, I start with the oldest first, reading the last post, using this button: http://www.cellar.org/images/buttons/lastpost.gif. When I've read all the posts in that thread that are new to me, I use my browser's back function, and move up the list to the next oldest unread topic and repeat the process. I may feel moved to reply, usually that's a safe bet. After I've posted my reply I use the browser's back function again until I get to the thread listing again.

When I've read all the new posts, I choose the bookmark for "Today's posts" (see url above) and then I start a new round of catching up. Rinse, repeat until it runs clear. The math geek in the house will recognize this strategy of traversing the tree and know the real name for it, but I forget what it's called.

So that's how I keep up. Toldja it was TMI.

I (also in Firefox) open the "New Posts" screen, then middle click (open new tab) on each http://www.cellar.org/images/buttons/firstnew.gif icon, opening each thread in a new tab. I then read and close each tab until I run out.

wolf 08-19-2005 12:27 AM

I (also in Firefox) hit the new posts button, and have my browser set NOT to refresh when I use the history to go back to the "search" screen for new posts. I wend my way through each post starting with the most recent until I've read everything, then I hit new posts again to see if I've missed anything or if someone has added to a thread that I've already read. Repeat as necessary.

It's the setup thats supposed to be funny. Half the lamest jokes around begin "Two (whatever) walk into a bar... Or- An Irishmen, a Polack and a Jew walk into a bar... Or- A lesbian and a lawyer walk into a bar, They're each carrying a poodle under their arms... Etc.
You asked for no old and boring Aussie jokes. I was just tying to be a wise ass by starting with one of the oldest setups around. Its kind of an equal opportunity insult.
Here's a real shot in the dark. Ever heard of a town called Woomera? My girlfriend was based there years ago.

Kagen4o4 08-22-2005 03:01 AM

i know what you were doing. my joke was "i dont get it"
woomera is where we seem to ditch most of the people coming illegally to australia. was your girlfriend being based there a joke too?

Found this thread again, at last - knew I'd seen it before, but damned if I could remember where...
