Seemed like the Indian version of a Crazy Old Cat Lady to me, but the pink dye right at her hair line symbolises marriage, as far as I know. Wonder what the husband does for a living.

Clodfobble 03-04-2005 02:17 PM

I thought the red dot on the forehead meant not married?

Montmorency 03-04-2005 02:55 PM

I really wish I knew.

Quote:

Bindi, the "holy dot," traditionally worn on the forehead of married Hindu women—it is believed to protect women and their husbands. /.../ It is usually a red dot made with vermilion.

In the contemporary age the bindi has become a decorative item and is worn by unmarried as well as non-Hindu women. It is no longer restricted in colour or shape. Self-adhesive bindis made from felt in various designs and colours are now available.

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bindi

Made me curious now. I'll report back if I can dig up something else.

An Indian friend of mine confirms the red dye is an indication that she is married.

How fortuitous that this showed up in my mailbox today ...

Quote:

For centuries Hindu women have worn a red dot on their foreheads.
We have naively thought it had something to do with their religion.
The real story has been revealed by the Indian Embassy in Washington.
When a Hindu woman marries, on her wedding night the husband scratches off the red dot to see if he has won a convenience store, a gas station, a donut shop, or a motel in Florida.

Wolf,
Which explains why the Pakistani football team has never won the world cup.
Every time they get a "corner" they open up a corner shop.

Ask Limey.

During the late 70s there was a bit of a soccer craze here in the US ... Pele and Beckenbauer playing for US Teams and all. I believe the Philly soccer team was called the Fury, and I remember the name of the Chicago Sting as well. I subscribed to a soccer magazine and watched as much soccer on television as possible. I was pretty into it.

Then later on my friends' kids were playing soccer and I was pressed into service as their rent-a-mom as their dad was quite ill and could no longer attend their games, so I was keeping the girls' routines as normal as possible, and I refreshed some of the old info.

I get the joke. Both parts. It's a good one.

You mean US Team - The Cosmos. Don't forget to add Chinaglia. I still have my program from Beckenbauer's retirement game. That was the game against the Brasilian national team, where Pele came back for one game - played one half for each team. GREAT game

The Cosmos won 5 NASL championships - the 1977 team was probably the ultimate soccer "dream team"

Pele
Beckenbauer
Chinaglia
Carlos Alberto

et al - that was the year that Pele retired
