Northwest Somerset, West coast of England looking out at Wales. Well someone has to. :yelsick:

out AT?
Reading quickly, I thought you had said out FOR. You got to keep an eye on those buggers. Spending all that time underground, and all the men singing together. They'll revolt and secede one of these days ... |
im still in Belgium, and dont know really where it lays hahaaha Amerika is a big Country so u could be on any side off me! hahaha
Triestemoi, can i ask u...whats that name? Is it part Dutch, part French? Cause over here it means something. |
I look 'at' Wales whenever I look out of my living room window, because I live almost on the beach here in England and look out at the Welsh coast, way in the distance across the channel. And you're right Wolf, somebody has to keep an eye on them. You know the origin of the expression 'to Welsh on a deal.....'?

I thought it was "Welch" and had something to do with substandard grape juice ... ;)

I have been out tonight with a bunch of friends and we got around to where this phrase/expression originated. You know how nationalities are ascribed wicked stereotypes like miserly Scots, toffee nosed English (as if...) and thick as plank Irish. Well the 'Welshing on the deal' is about how you never trust the Welsh because they are confidence tricksters/fraudsters, ALL mythology you understand. Don't want to hurt national sensibilities here. Anyway we all agreed tonight that we use the expression about 'Welshing', but nobody actually knew the origin, including me. I think it's sometimes pronounced Welching but haven't heard the grapejuice theory. I'll look into it tomorrow and see if I can trace its origins, oh and my brother said 'bet its got something to do with coal.....' I just think its unatural, all those men singing together in a strange language. Could it be connected to their famous love of their sheep.....?

Cool! I started this thread at the beginning of September. Glad to see it's still alive!

So, where in the Northwest are you tristemoi? As sycamore mentioned, I live in north Seattle and I believe that Urocyes lives in Bellevue.
And why so sad? |
