I am glad a moderate republican is running for office. It is good the republican party is evolving into something with more rounded philosophy to fit in a world that is well...modern. *hello* It is time establishment republicans stopped defining themselves on 2 or 3 single issues.

McCain is moderate?
John "stay for a hundred years" McCain is a moderate?

Sure. Democrats believe the State should control the economy. Republicans believe the State should control society. McCain is right in the middle, the State should control all.

In 2000 he seemed to be so I give him the benefit of the doubt since the conservative base thinks he isn't conservative enough.

IOW he thinks rather than blindly support the party's agenda. Unfortunately, on a few occasions, McCain appealed to the blind believers by courting the myopic. That is when his poll numbers dropped approaching zero. The revival of McCain started when he stopped appealing to right wing religious fanatics and began talking about reality. This caused the righteous (ie George Jr administration) to attack McCain.
