Actually, Toad, the portion from the Schuylkill to Broad St. has been around since the 70s.

Not the below ground part!

Okay...let's make sure we're on the same page here...
Based on what I've read, 676 from the Schuylkill to Broad Street has been around since the 70s. The depressed section from the Ben Franklin Bridge (8th Street) to Broad Street (as well as the connection to 95) was completed in 1991. So, today, Rho and I are on 676 Westbound. We pass the Ben Franklin Parkway exit (22nd Street), we go under 22nd Street, I see the Toynbee tile, then the highway rises as it crosses the Schuylkill River and merges with 76. You're saying that that part of the highway is 1991 vintage as well? |
Well as nutty as this sounds, the whole thing was just a city street at that time, with red light intersections and all. I think it went under 22nd street originally... but it intersected with Broad, with a light.
