It's mildly less soul destroying than being on the dole with the various 'work programmes' to be patronised by people young enough to be my kids.

Yeah, but most of those youngsters you could probably boss around and get away with it. Is the problem your location doesn't provide any opportunities, or you find the opportunities they do provide are distasteful? Seems to me you'd make a great tutor, if you could find somebody to tute.

To teach at university level I need published work. To teach lower down the scale, I'd need teaching qualifications. To teach privately I'd need a place to teach in (a house big enough to have a study, for example) and/or transport to and from student's houses.

In theory, I am trying to get stuff written up for publication whilst i am only working part-time, in order to stand a chance applying for lecturing posts.
