This is a forum not a newspaper.

Thank FSM that it IS news worthy. There are not a lot of people out there who would kill a child as casually as one might swat a mosquito. When some subhuman miscreant actually does such a thing, it's news. And Dana is right. Since when did every post on the Cellar have to lead to some intellectually uplifting discussion?

And since when did a discussion with tommyboy ever lead to that.

@tw - Don't like the thread little man - DON'T POST.

Facts ...
It has a population of about 11,000 - Not exactly a large place.
Its a small town near Scranton. Again - pretty rural compared to a city like Philly.

I agree it is newsworthy in the appalling nature of the act, but I also agree with TW to some degree in that its newsworthiness is largely due to the sensationalism of the act.

Making it much more newsworthy than the millions of children in the US going to bed hungry every night or the fact that a mature and responsible couple cannot adopt and give a loving home to a child in some states if they happen to be the same sex. Issues that if they were discussed more in larger political arenas than the Cellar could result in meaningful actions that would improve the lives of children.

You must be thinking of a different Lake Ariel. I've been there. It's next to Honesdale and Hawley, which are both small towns, and it's smaller than each. It's a tiny village that's sprawled out. It's pretty rural. It's a good 2.5 hours from NYC, so that would be 5 hours of commuting time. Nobody there commutes daily to NYC.

But you are right. This is an emotional story of no real importance to any dwellar's lives.

This is an emotional story with no more importance to any dwellar's lives than many of the other stories we discuss.

Well, only if Republican lawmakers would base public policy decisions on what might be best for the children rather than invoking or attempting to impose their religious beliefs on the broader public (add) or slash and burn budget cutting.

Or maybe you think proposing to cut the WIC (women, infant, children) supplemental food program by nearly $1 billion will not impact the lives of hundreds of thousands of children.

Or deciding that it's more important to line the pockets of the already rich than for a young couple to feel that they can earn enough to support two children.

Or demanding to defund Planned Parenthood which educates young women on family planning issues.

Sorry F&B - I misread your post. I thought you were referring to larger discussions IN THE CELLAR having some impact. Haven't had my coffee yet.

To stay a little more on topic -

As a father, I just cannot fathom even the slightest thought of killing one of my children, let alone in the manner it was done.

No problem.

I generally avoid the discussions that IMO are more sensational than substantive; just a personal choice and no reflection on others.

Me neither, but to be honest, when they were newborns, it was different. Especially the first one. I hadn't fully "bonded" with the baby yet, and it was crying all the time. I understood the motivation behind infanticide then.
