I think everyone has to see it at least once in their lives. The earlier the better.

We watched Blazing Saddles obsessively at 13/14.
We used to whisper "Up yours nigger" to eachother in the old lady's voice and fall about laughing.
We knew it was rude and racist, but that's why we found it so funny.
It was grossly inapproprite, and that made it funnier.

Didn't find the farting scene funny though.
Everyone else thought that was the best bit.

What? NO WAY. You should definitely NOT SHOW THAT MOVIE to your kid.



Sorry, I was just rebelling against everyone else's conformist answers. The movie's fine for a 13-year-old.

I would show it to my teenager if I had one. But, before I did, I would try to explain that, even way back in 1974, Mel Brooks was trying to show the ridiculousness of racism through humor. (Something some adult Dwellars have problems grasping.) I believe he was trying to take the power from the word 'nigger', (and racism in general), by using it as a foil for humor so often it loses it's grip in the psyche.

And the reason he used that word and that particular form of racism more than, say, the Irish, the Scottish, the Chinese, the Jewish, (and he hits them all) is that 'white-on-black' racism was the form of racism that was way prevalent at that time.

Show it to 'em. But, make sure they know he was making fun of racism and racists, not the races themselves.

That said, "Blazing Saddles" is my favorite movie of all time.

After that they'll be ready for Office Space.

my kids love it except for addie. i bet they were around 10-12 when they first saw it.

You should. An old boyfriend wanted me to watch it and I was thinking "it sounds STUPID. Hmmmph."

Once I watched I was hooked. It's very funny.

I had to ask my Mum why that was funny.
She said, "Oh the Americans always have to hate someone."
A very unsatisfactory response. I decided it must be a reference to terrorism. Took me a while to really understand it.

Then again, around the same time I asked them what a heterosexual was and they explained it was a man who fancied other men. I don't think they had ever heard the term in their lives. And deep in heteroland, why should they?
