Feeling More Freezing Than the Temperature

Let’s break down what AccuWeather’s “RealFeel” Temperature
takes into account on extremely cold days like this.
You may have noticed in our forecast roundup that “RealFeel”
forecasts can be quite a bit different than just the plain old temperature.
On their website, AccuWeather describes the number as
“a unique composite of the effects of temperature, wind, humidity,
sunshine intensity, cloudiness, precipitation and elevation on the human body
— everything that affects how warm or cold a person feels.”

Its very warm out here in Cortez, too. Yesterday, I opened up my doors and all my windows because it felt like May instead of December. I actually put on shorts to clean my apartment. This time last year Cortez was under a foot of snow. This year we've only once had a wimpy inch or so that melted immediently. Christmas? Bah Humbug!

That is truly a chillin crib. Wasn't just a couple of years ago that you were on the verge of homelessness? What happened? Did I miss a report on your reversal of (mis)fortune?

F3, About 2 years ago my VA disability was upgraded to 70% $1228.00 a month, then last june I got social security Keryx was able to quit her job (she is going to do taxes next year a job she loves.) and we got a new apartment in the good side of town. The Government takes good care of its veterans.

When you're already below zero, I doubt that feeling three degrees warmer will matter to Mr. Frostbite.

Repeat after me: When the weather's hot and sticky...
The reason it can feel warmer than the actual temp has to do with standing in the sun, no wind, and dry air. moisture in the air allows heat to move to cold more easily, the sun adds radiant heat, and no wind also slows the transfer of heat toward cold. Heat=you, cold=them.

Along the lines of "I know how to read" I also understand the concept of humdity, and wind, and sun. I've actually lived on this earth a few years. In Ohio, no less. ;)

With wind chill, the damn cold wind goes everywhere. Even if you step behind a building it blows around and gets you.

Yeah, what he said.

THanks lamp.

So I do get it now. RealFeel® isn't anything like wind chill. Wind chill, though kind of stupid, is an actual scientific number using the actual temperature and what the temperature feels like when the wind is blowing at 30 mph. Maybe not the most valid measure in the world, but I get the concept...having lived in wind chills. (Humidity is a silly thing to even bring into the discussion at 10 degrees.)

RealFeel® is something stupid some weather people made up as a marketing ploy. That's why it's copyrighted. "Hey, watch OUR BROADCAST...we know how you REALLY feel, when you're standing in the sun and behind a snowbank with your kid's pup-tent hanging on the clothesline and with the wind at 23 mph."

I do feel better! :)

edit: And another thing: I can get why 10 degrees vs. -3 degrees could matter. Who really cares if, instead of minus 15, it feels like minus 11?

Poppycock I say! Poppy! Cock!

I said "Good Day!"

footfootfoot 12-14-2010 11:28 AM

Mister frostbite, feeze me a toe
Make it the coldest that I'll ever know
Give it some blacks spots, you won't hear me scoff
Then when it dies I'll watch the toenail fall off

Mister Frostbite, I'm hardly cold
Don't have a flagpole to lick or to hold
So Please turn on your arctic snow
Mister Frostbite, freeze me a toe

So you say, but how do we really know?

for example, and this applies to Glatt as well, If you were smart enough to read, wouldn't it stand to reason that you'd be smart enough to walk on the sunny side of the street when the sun was out and the frost was on the pumpkin?

I'm glad it turned out well for you! The Gov't should take care of its veterans.

If there is frost on my pumpkin I take a shower.

So, then...RealFeel® assumes you're not a blithering idiot? Damn brainwashing, I say.

TV weathermen should be an endangered species.
A map of isobars is really all that is needed.

Oh, and a window.
