Like a lot of things, ammo prices are sharply dependent on the volume you're buying in.

Also on demand; there's a lot of people carrying/shooting .45 ACP ($15/box for 20 Cor-Bon +P 165 grain jacketed hollow points) whereas .50 AE is pretty much a round for movie stars and size queens. 20 rounds of that (325 Grains, Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point) will indeed run you $20 when it's not on sale.

(.454 Casull is up there too; a box of 20 rounds of Cor-Bon 320 grain Casull will cost you $30. And make your wrist and shoulder hurt too.)

My approach is: carry a 9mm auto with a 12-round magazine, and shoot double-taps. This way, you can either put 250 gr into the target (assuming a self-defense round, most of your ammo costs are for full-metal jacket practice amm o anyway, $10 or less for 50 rounds) or settle for a single 125 gr bullet but spreak them out across twice as many targets. That 9mm slug is probably moving at a higher MV too...

Flexibility is good.

juju - Yes, they do.

9mm for CC is probably reasonable and wise. Not too big, not so much recoil - so you can get off 2 shots quickly and accurately.

What make/model do you carry? I've always had a strong liking for Glock, myself, but... just curious what other people are carrying.

Inaccurate as hell over 10 yards, probably would only piss off a wacked out speed freak.

But, the psychological advantage is priceless if you have it when you need it... fortunately I've never needed it.

Glocks are indeed very nice.

But a used Kel-Tec P-11 found its way into my life (we're still not spending money we don't have to around here) though a barter deal with a local gun shop, and It's what I carry. The P-11 was designed to accept Smith & Wesson 5900 and 6900 series magazines, so 12 and 15 round pre-ban mags are fairly easy to come by.

A 12-round mag with grip extension and finger rest vastly improves the steadiness of the hold; otherwise I'd only be able to get two fingers on the grip. And with the gun itself only weighing 14 oz unloaded, a firm grip is necessary if the slide is to operate reliably. Mine has a black polymer grip and a "belt" clip (usually used with a waistband or pocket).

Kel-Tec made the same gun chambered for a .40 S&W, but they've withdrawn it because too many people limpwristed it and then returned it as defective. With a very light frame, a lot of the push to compress the slide spring to chamber the next round has to come from the shooter's grip;there's very little inertia in 14 oz.

Yes, there definately are Krispy Kremes. They're insanely good.

Probably. It is a bit of a mousegun. Kel-Tec makes a nice .32 auto you might want to look at. People still call even that a spitwad though

I'm a Glock convert myself. I carry one whenever I can, but I also hold my dear old .45 close.

Nothing like a Para-Ordnance P-14 with pre-ban mags weighing you down when you're in a bad situation that you can't handle any other way.

Neither. Mine's a .44. I have a first generation IMI Desert Eagle, made before the Israelis licensed the design to Magnum Research. They came in .357, .41 (God only knows why), .44, and .50 AE. I don't think they ever made one chambered for .45 ACP, did they?

You're right, though. .50 AE ammo is pretty expensive... .44 Magnum rounds are only marginally less so. That's why I handload. ;)

We do have bears down here. I think most of us are smart enough not to try to take on even a brown bear (much less a grizzly) with a handgun. It takes a *very* lucky shot to stop a bear with a handgun.
