I believe the reason the dental tech sent him to the doctor, is the gums were already showing signs of cancer... or "pre-cancer"... which caused the doctor to determine continued use would surely to result in cancer, very quickly.
Not a matter of statistical odds, but direct examination of condition, with cause and effect correlation.
However, I'm not a doctor and if I were, I'd be a gynecologist.
