Were I the cop's defense counsel in the civil trial, I'd get around the scumbag's lawyer's dressing him up nice by bringing in a copy of his mug shot and asking the jury of they see any injuries. If they do, I'd ask if they think it's worth $5 million. Let them see his booking photo.
