Seriously. I like art. Art is great. If I donate my body to art, then you go ahead and cut it up and tan the skin and make toothpicks out of my bones. Whatever's arty.
But if I donate my body to science, please put it to some sort of actual use, or my ghost is going to be all sorts of put out. I mean, you could at least shove it in Body Worlds. Label it as "Totally Average Guy, Notice Effects of Sitting In Front of Computer a Lot". It will be amazing (maybe). |

What's next...a mobile made of kidneys, tongues and eyeballs?
I agree...totally tasteless. I don't know where some people get their ideas of what is art. My ex was an art major and she had some weird fucking friends. |

Would it be racist of me to speculate that he uses white skin because that's all he's got to work with? I wonder the racial and gender breakdown of people who donate their bodies to science.
Just sayin'. |
Interesting first post - welcome - I think.
|
I don't think it would be racist to ask the question. In fact there should be some stats out there on it. I suspect that there is a much lower rate of donation by people other than white for many reasons, esp cultural and religious. We may have had one out of 9 bodies in our lab that was a black person.
|
... which would be fine, except that his lab only does electronics research...
Seriously (just for a moment), is one balck per nine people a reasonable proportionate representation of the population in your area? It sounds about right for the USA in general. |

Oh, and welcome to the Cellar. :D |
I would have no problem with it - IF the skin had been left by people with the intention of making art.
What bothers me is that the artist is making a political and a racial statement out of people who selflessly donated their bodies so that the rest of the human race could benefit. And he is using their gift to make a statement about how awful America is, Americans are, white Americans behave. No. Wrong. Now, if you really want to be controversial, make a statement about crime using the skins of people killed on Death Row. Or about gang culture using skins of people shot on the streets of cities with gang related killings. Or about drugs using junkie hides. Don't take completely unrelated skins and try to say something about a whole country. Grrrr. And I'm pretty liberal in my definition of art. This is something I would not go to see. This is misrepresentational. If that is a word. If I want lies and generalisations I can read a newspaper. BTW - Clod. You're not thinking of home schooling are you? Only I kinda worry about your idea of a project ;) |
