Ryokans involve sleeping on a futon on the floor, which will have straw mats on it. Damn good thing they have that lovely hot spring/bath. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Outdooor baaaaath.

Different customs and ones I have read up on.
And the harmony between man-made structures and nature, which seems to have been lost in Japanese cites, but it far more evident in their countryside than ours.

Have you seen that new season of programmes they've got planned? (I think channel 4) looking at Japanese culture. I can't wait. I think it'll be really interesting. I used to love watching Jonathon Ross's Japanorama.
