thanks all, though. Very interested to hear the flat-top views.

I paid about $350 for the flat top that I had at a Sears outlet
Most of these units have minimal damage. Sometimes on the side or back (who cares) or the weren't the right color scheme, whatever, for the owner.

thanks classic, good idea -the $1K was referring to sleeve's stove....

I know - I choked when I saw that. Gotta admit though - Its a bangin' appliance! Just way outta my price range.

My parents always had gas, and it is by far my preference for the hob.
They now have a flat top stove (although, again, not one of those fancy ones).

Mum replaced all her pans, the heat is fast, yes, but doesn't cool down anywhere near as quickly as gas. And no-one except herself is allowed to clean it. She seems to think it is made of eggshells or something. And it has a special cleaner and a special cloth.

Then again, she won't even let anyone else use the grill either, although I haven't quite figured out why that is. It's a low level grill - I just don't get why ovens don't have eye level grills any more - surely the best way to keep an eye on what is being grilled is to be able to see it?

Anyway, it's probably Mum and her usual paranoia (esp given her clumsy daughter :)) but to me it's like putting plastic on a sofa to stop it getting ruined. I think she's have been better off with a gas hob that she didn't have to worry about constantly. Of course we're fully connected already, so I can see where YMMV.

"hob" :giggle: You crazy brits.

Gas range. You can't really do stir-fry properly with electric.

New house doesn't have gas.

Electric heat? Isn't that expensive?

classicman 01-20-2009 01:42 PM

Pie - Bummer!

dar - depends upon the size of the house and some other factors... usually it is though.

It's all heat pumps down here. Though when we had that stretch in the single digits last week, the auxiliary heat (electric) did come on.

I had to get used to the sound of the heat exchanger unit coming on in the middle of winter. I'm slowly becoming acclimatized.

Appropriately asked. It's an archaic nickname for the devil.

dar512 01-20-2009 04:41 PM

Or it's British for cooktop.
