Back to the Long Pig!
Just can't get away from cannibals.

I've written the new hit song

Mentioning what has been said, that has not been said before, picking up the style of the day. Amongst the fresh tags in 1979's stylesheet: personal ads; pina coladas; health food; yoga; and calling your girlfriend the "old lady". The song is offensive for pandering to such things in such an obvious manner. It's a trick to get you to listen to it.

Yes, I like Red Bull and vodkas,
gettin' caught in hurricanes,
Doin' kundalini yoga,
for fibromyalgia pain...

Hey, it's a serious medical problem and if I could only get the liquid morphine I need everyday to do my activities of daily living....but, (giant sigh) they only give me vicoprophen.

I KNOW there are truly people out there who suffer....but, mostly, I"ve seen druggies with it.

Shawnee123 08-29-2008 02:26 PM

Hey, while I have you musicians around...what about the song itself: the music, the arrangement...isn't the PenisColada song rather...tripe?

I've seen LOTS of women who don't like to work with it. I shouldn't be like this, but I don't believe in it.

I sorta/kinda feel the same. If you come in with no diagnostics and say, "I've fibromyalgia, gimme [insert favorite drug here]," it gets a bit fishy.
Well, how do you KNOW it's fibromyalgia and not something else if nothing else has been ruled out?"

"Just gimme XYZ."

Won't fly with most docs.

Although, recommending pina coladas might ease the pain.

Shawnee123 08-29-2008 02:36 PM

Yeah, that's how I see it too...from people I know who say they "suffer" (who aren't even the dreaded students I usually speak of!) ;)

Absolutely. As pop/rock-generic as possible for its time. The whole point of the arrangement is to get out of the way of the big vocal, so the listener can be bashed over the head with the lyric.

Of course there are other artists that use this approach, they're just more subtle about it. (B. Springsteen)

I like pina coladas.

I don't like the song. It is, as Shawnee said, formulaic. It commits the cardinal musical sin of being lame.

glatt 08-29-2008 03:57 PM

I'm actually with you, Shawnee. I hate the message of the song. When I was a kid I thought it was supposed to be romantic, but now that I'm an adult, I despise the story of two cheaters. I also agree with SteveDallas that it's lame. But I always enjoy it when I hear it (not very often) because it really captures the time. Kinda like hearing the Doobies.

Aliantha 08-29-2008 04:51 PM

I like pina coladas, but I agree they generally don't have enough alcohol in them. That's why it's always beneficial to make your own. ;)

Clodfobble 08-29-2008 04:53 PM

At this very moment, I have pina colada popsicles in my freezer, as well as pina colada yogurt in the refrigerator. I am a big fan of the flavor.

Thus far, the only people I see who claim to have Fibromyalgia definitely have Borderline Personality Disorder.
