Read the late Peter Hathaway Capstick for some discussion of elephant culling techniques. He did that for a spell, in SA I believe. Without helicopters, working afoot.

Not, he said, at all the same thing as a hunting expedition, and it wasn't a matter of simply shrinking a given family group of elephants, but of wiping it out entirely -- while leaving others alone to maintain the population. It has been difficult to balance elephants and sustainable environment to put them in and farming for decades now.
