It looks as though “pirogue” is right, as it is used in the headline
of an octobre 2013 article about the night-time sinking on the Niger
in Mali of a large one with 20 deaths and 23 missing.
The article also uses the word “pinnaces” to describe such boats, smaller in size.

Google tells me the picture is captioned, "A canoe on the Niger River". That's hardly what I'd envision if someone said canoe. A good example of even if you understand the language, you might not get the meaning if you don't know the culture of the speaker. The value of photographs is immeasurable.

Anyway, that "canoe" looks like half the design was dictated by practical needs and half by aesthetics. I suppose it's traditional and may be trying to please certain gods, but it's certainly pleasing to the eye. That's verified by the sheer number of photographs and art prints for sale online, featuring a lone pirogue on the Niger.

I didn't look properly at the posting date of the OT.
I was shocked by how young Ali's boys looked and the husband refs.

Caught up eventually.

The Costa Concordia, after two years of being partially submerged, at imgur.

Clarification: The Costa Concordia was not submerged in imgur, it was submerged in the Tyrrhenian Sea.:D

Pygmy kayak.

I considered building one, but they were only available in kit form when I was looking. I wanted to build from plans and save a buck or two. They are attractive though.

xoxoxoBruce 01-25-2016 01:32 PM

Attractive? I'd say so, attractive enough to pick up a blond and a redhead. ;)

BigV 01-25-2016 05:42 PM

Yeah, but they look like a couple of bitches.

Gotta take what comes, when you're paddling your own canoe.

Built in 1928 for Ransom E. Olds and sold in 1930 to Al Capone...

BigV 08-31-2016 10:36 PM

those look like 1928 dollars.

She's lovely.

Gravdigr 09-16-2016 11:33 AM

Better bigger.

footfootfoot 09-16-2016 12:35 PM

Overstated. Not very extreme at all. Let's start with seeing how the boat deals with getting hit broadside with a big wave.

Not impressed.

Gravdigr 09-17-2016 02:49 PM

It says "our most extreme", not "the most extreme", or, "foot's most extreme"...It may very well have been their most extreme boat evar.

It is beyond doubt the most extreme boat test I've ever seen those guys do, because it's the only boat test I've ever seen those guys do.:D
