That's like the reaction from Jehovah's Witnesses: just tell them you're catholic, true or not. They leave skid marks trying to get off your porch. :p

If you're trying to make a living selling stuff on the phone throught cold calling and your feelings are hurt when people just hang up, then it's not the job for you.

rkzenrage 02-22-2007 02:58 PM

You know who is REALLY at fault and who pisses me off A LOT... anyone who buys from telemarketers.
They are BAD PEOPLE!!!!!!
I may have to rethink my position on the existence of evil and bad people now.
I am serious about telemarketing being illegal, also, I am on every no-call list out there.
Worked for a while, about two months ago I started getting them again... something I should know?

Another thing, I don't talk to machines, no I will not "hold for your important message".
I really pissed-off a medical business with that recently.
"We have been trying to get in touch with you for six months".
I told them I have not heard from them at all. She said that I have been hanging up on them, so I told her that I hang-up on any calls that come-up with all zeros, private on my caller ID (they don't get to leave messages if they are too sleazy and hide) and I hang-up on machines. If you want to talk to me, you will call me.
For some reason she took it personally... makes no sense to me. I was very polite the whole time & did not use the word sleazy, just meant it.

Why would it be?
However, I still think just disconnecting is the way to go.

Shawnee123 02-22-2007 03:03 PM

My ex used to call them out if they were rude , then they would call him an ass and he couldn't retaliate because there was no number. THAT should be illegal.

Right out of college I worked for a now mostly defunct photo place where I had to call people. I almost threw up every night before I went to work. I hated it.

I don't have the patience for phones at all!

A couple of years ago I came up with the perfect response to both Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons:

"I'm sorry, but my husband makes all the religious decisions for the family."

If you say it with just the right amount of innocent cluelessness, they can't possibly respond, because they both believe that's the way it should be. Sometimes they ask when he'll be home, but once I know what they look like I don't answer the door again.

rkzenrage 02-22-2007 03:10 PM

Shawnee, I do the same, "No thanks" *standard objective overcoming response from JW (Our Mormons usually just leave, they are pretty polite here)* "Wow, you are really pretty rude huh?".
They get a shocked look on their face then leave in haste.

I also feel door to door solicitation should be illegal. I am disabled and it is often amazingly painful for me to try to answer the door.
Secondly, I worked nights for many, many years... you don't even want to begin to get me started on that one, especially during a shift change.
Yes, one unsolicited, premeditated, solicitation is harassment.

I consider it my civic duty to keep telemarketers and other solicitors on-the-line as long as I can stand it. Then they have just that much less time to annoy my neighbors.

Also, I once used a call to test the range on my cordless phone... half the block down the street before they started to break-up!

I wonder how it would go if a bloke tried this line.

This is why I don't use cordless phones. Anyone with the right equipment can hear you quite clearly for a similar distance.

Luckily barefoot doesn't normally discuss her clandestine espionage activities on the phone, nor her Witness Protection Program status.

You don't even need similar equipment - any baby monitor will do.

Not to her. Which equals mean. If you're gonna preach, at least practice it.

Okay - you got me. Once, in 1983, I was mean to a telemarketer. I thought I was having some fun at an annoying telemarketer's expense, and everybody I've ever shared that story with has laughed. Alas, I find that I've been mean. Please forgive me. I've changed - I swear it!
