No, you were right the first time. Misestimated is fine, misunderestimated would be a double negative/made up word. So, misestimated, or underestimated. :D

A similar thing happened in Oahu, Hawaii just last month: http://www.khnl.com/Global/story.asp?S=5369720. Forced a closure of a highway, made some people sleep in their cars overnight!

It shows how little it takes to screw the pooch for commuters. It says the H-1 which I imagine is the major highway in those parts.
