Principle over winning is one big reason why so many Democrats ran to Ralph Nader that year.

Not putting Joe "No freedom from religion" Lieberman near the White House was a big part of that principle, and while many Naderites today regret those votes, Lieberman himself's done nothing to prove them wrong.
