I am disappointed in this thread.

I thought there would be AC/DC.

grammar is a different thing. I'm talking about punctuation. Usually, an apostrophe is used to contract two words or to indicate possession... occasionally to note a missing letter. And, sometimes in names of characters in Sci Fi stories.

I was just curious.

You think that's evil...behold Danzig's "Invocation".

If I'm going to hell for AC/DC, where Ima go for this? Iowa?

They are also valid as a way to identify multiples of acronyms if confusion may otherwise result. I would far rather see DVDs than dvd's, but I admit sometimes it is useful.

ZenGum 04-02-2012 07:09 AM

I disagree, Sundae.

A DVD and the DVD's cover.

Three DVDs and the DVDs' cover.

Single, single possessive, plural, plural possessive. Don't cross the streams.

I was thinking about photo's as a plural, and you might argue that the apostrophe substitutes in for the missing letters "graph", but then you'd need to write photo' as the singular form.

Sundae 04-02-2012 11:37 AM

You might disagree, but it is a valid use.
So there.

Gravdigr 04-02-2012 03:18 PM

I disagree with both of ya. But, just for spite.

Sundae 04-02-2012 03:22 PM

Oh FTR - flies don't rot on a dead fish.
They breed.
It's an affirmation of life.

Gravdigr 04-02-2012 03:38 PM

Uhhh...

ETA: Ah, nevermind.
