Exploding Kittens is from the guy who does The Oatmeal web comic. We bought an expansion pack for Exploding Kittens at Goodwill, but I'm not sure if we have the base game. We have a lot of games.

glatt 01-11-2018 03:32 PM

The expansion pack isn't much use without the base game.

I try to keep the use of canned foods to a minimum, but there are times when it's handy to have a tin of ham available for a quick salad lunch, as today.

My culinary skills are nowhere near those of Gordon Ramsay, but I have (silently) given him a run for his money when it came to the use of colloquial language when wielding the tin opener in the past.

Neither of the openers I had were much good, and if you didn't start the opening process near the vertical seam of the tin, you were doomed to haunt the kitchen for all eternity.

Never did I manage to open a can neatly or smoothly.

I have come within a hair's breadth, on more than one occasion, of performing an accidental amputation of a finger or two such was the jagged nature of the steel before me.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, so last week I bought a stainless steel can opener at Marks & Spencer.

It was a hefty £7.50 (a smidgin under $10) but worth every penny. Minimum effort required to produce an A1 result.

That's my 'can do' attitude at work. In a manner of speaking. ;)

Me too, and they don't make 'em like they used to. Mine is from the 1960s. Still works like a charm.

After my mom gave me this beauty years ago, she went through another five or six that were all shit.

Gravdigr 07-24-2018 01:52 PM

And it's in better shape than mine.

xoxoxoBruce 07-24-2018 01:55 PM

I had an electric one until the spring that holds that handle up got weak enough to let the damn thing turn itself on. After an unknown period of time it filled the house with smoke. :haha:

Glinda 07-24-2018 02:08 PM

Oh, jeez!

Gravdigr 07-24-2018 02:55 PM

A buddy's brother had a toaster short circuit while they were away. Burned their house to the ground.

I never leave the toaster plugged in. Ever.

Now, with your can opener tale, I can never leave the can opener plugged in either.

xoxoxoBruce 07-24-2018 03:59 PM

Have to remember millions of toasters and can openers don't combust.

Gravdigr 07-26-2018 03:48 PM

It's not those I'm worried about.

captainhook455 07-29-2018 07:15 AM

I had a Black and Decker worked great and when it died I bought another. It wasn't so good as it left the can lids ragid. So we were yard sailing and found a 60's type for 2 bucks. We have had that one for at least 17 years. Still going strong.

Pamela 08-03-2018 11:28 PM

I use a manual opener and a P-38 army opener in a pinch.

Gravdigr 08-04-2018 03:22 PM

Got about a half dozen of 'em.

Don't know where any of them are.

Confused of Aylesbury here.

I'm puzzled by the reference to a P-38 army opener.

I believe that the P-38 was the Lockheed Lightning aircraft.

I crave a disambiguation. :)

He's talking about the can openers Walther made for the German Army. It does take a little practice to shoot the lids off cans.

Why, I never heard of such a thing! Must've been for old-time soldiers who ate C-Rations out of cans. I was raised on MREs and LRPs.

I may have eaten some C-rations; but, choose not to remember.

Carruthers 08-05-2018 04:30 AM

As Rumpole of the Bailey would say, I'm grateful to m'learned friends. :thumb:

sexobon 08-05-2018 08:54 AM

When I entered the US military, it was transitioning from Meal, Combat, Individual (MCI) to Meal, Ready to Eat (MRE). The former being in cans, the latter in retort pouches. The MCI was the successor to the C-Ration and they were very much alike with both being canned goods. There were times when I was issued a mixture of both; until, the stockpile of MCIs was exhausted.

I never heard anyone call an MCI by that name though, everyone still called them C-Rations. I supposed they felt the "C" might as well imply "Canned" rather than just being an alphabetic type designator. It was much like the situation with "Jerry" cans which derives from jeroboam; but, sounds (i.e. Gerry) like it could be associated with the Germans who were primary users of them.

The canned ration meal was packed in a cardboard box with food accoutrements and accessories. A dozen boxes came in a cardboard case. A few P38s, in individual pouches, were loosely tossed into each case. They neither came in each boxed meal nor were there enough for each meal in the case since they were expected to be reused and those in the case intended as replacements for lost, damaged, or worn out ones.

I would go through the discarded case boxes and scarf up the unclaimed P38s. I left military service with a bag of about 50 of them which I gave away to family and friends. They were novelties to most. Some actually used them for outdoors adventures like camping in which canned goods were still popular. They have a hole in them for wear on a keychain or neck chain (with dog tags). While they were small and light, they had one major drawback … they lacked a corkscrew. I have a few leftovers from my brother when he was in the Army. I was on a camping trip and left my can opener, but had my p38 on the key fob. Well it doesn't work like it looks try the opposite and it opens cans. Unfortunately I had never used it and it was a decoration. How hard could it be?

Well I ended up cutting open a few cans with my knife before I figured it out.

Well whatever the hell number it was it was a reminder of my brother in the Army. I remember when Katz's Deli in NY advertised send your boy a Salami in the Army and my father did.

xoxoxoBruce 08-05-2018 09:55 AM

When I was a kid we had an opener with a corkscrew like that. I doubt it was military issue, maybe the source for the military later on.

I had a boss at Boeing who was a Colonel in the reserves. He brought is some MREs he kept in the trunk of his car for emergencies. I opened a foil pouched brownie and as I'd expect for a brownie with miles on it the surface was crisscrossed with cracks. What I didn't expect was the cracks were lined with white. Close examination showed it was crystals of sugar I assume migrated from the brownie... or cocaine for morale. :haha:

Don't have a P-38, Do know what one is, Do have a can opener that I've used to liberate canned food for my personal consumption.

I can wholeheartedly endorse the new(-ish, it came out in April) cherry Ale-8-One (a late one, get it?). Cherry ginger ale, Precious!!!

It is teh awesome.

fargon 11-02-2018 06:42 AM

WE don't have it with in 500 miles.

Diaphone Jim 11-02-2018 11:52 AM

The accepted fact (myth?) was that the P-38's whose little knife opened and closed easily (by gravity) was superior to the ones that had to be pried and pushed and would last much longer.
I still have a few that I kept with that belief in mind.

Hi Hopalong!

Welcome to the cellar!

Hopalong48 11-04-2018 08:13 AM

Begging your pardons, I should have introduced myself before jumping in. I am Buffaloguy on the VTF but I have to be Hopalong here.
The forum was recommended by a good friend, I felt at home right away.

I finally found and tried the original Ale8one. "The best of the Bluegrass in green glass" it says.

Attachment 65649

Made w/real ginger (make some w/real Mary Ann!!!:yum:), not overpowering, but, there is plenty of it. Not a whole lot of carbonation, but that's one of their selling points. Kinda like a flat-ish Sprite with ginger ale poured in it. You can definitely taste/feel the ginger.

Pretty good, but nothing to lose ya mind over. The cherry is much better.

Gravdigr 11-26-2018 03:53 PM

My empty glass smells like ginger.

Maybe it smells like Mary Ann, idk.:D

Griff 11-27-2018 04:53 PM

My last few batches of kombucha have been ginger. Good stuff, but it may be time for a change up.

BigV 11-28-2018 11:17 PM

whoops, wrong thread.

there we go, aaaalll better.

Clodfobble 04-09-2019 06:43 PM

I just ordered a new pair of glasses for Minifob, whose graveyard of broken glasses has finally slowed its growth to just one every 18-24 months. For a while, we lived in a world where one backup pair wasn't enough, because he might break those in the 3 weeks it took for the backup's new backup to arrive. As you can imagine, I'm a big fan of the Chinese websites that sell perfectly good frames and lenses for $20 total.

Anyway, in addition to the custom-cut sunglasses clip-ons for any pair, they now offer a custom-cut pair of 3D lens clip-ons, so you can watch 3D movies without the inconvenience of wearing glasses-over-your-glasses. For $3.95? Hell yes, I will.

Undertoad 04-21-2019 10:30 AM

All the Zojirushi products I have gotten have been quality. This travel mug is one of them. It never leaks, it keeps stuff hot for a long time, the opener is sturdy, and you can lock it shut to make sure you don't pour coffee on your stuff. I use the 20oz, and it is a big tall thing, but I guess that's so the vacuum insulation can keep everything as hot as possible. It works.

Hopalong48 04-21-2019 10:48 AM

I fully support Weller 12 yr old bourbon, as well as McKenna 10 yr old,
Others on request.

Stihl chainsaw MS 261 endorsed

Gravdigr 05-04-2019 08:43 PM

Stihl's good stuff.

Griff 05-05-2019 06:52 AM

I've been running Husquvarna for the last 30 years which have been fine, but I wanted something big enough to run on an Alaska mill and the Stihl guy went well under msrp. I ran a tank of gas through it yesterday and she seems like a go getter. Hopefully we get through the break in period smoothly and then really kick some.

Undertoad 05-05-2019 09:10 AM

Huge pawn shop item btw. Guys who got work doing landscaping would pawn their saws over the winter.

Griff 05-05-2019 09:55 AM

I bet! Any landscaping equipment would probably show up there. 461 not 261 btw. It’s a big one.

Gravdigr 05-05-2019 10:25 AM

The last Stihl I had was an 051, 24" bar.

Griff 05-05-2019 04:10 PM

89 CCs, that’s a damn horse.

Diaphone Jim 05-06-2019 12:08 PM

I have gotten good service from my Stihl 20'" 026 since 1991.
Had a Mac and Homelite previous.
I have used whatever gasohol mix I get for my vehicles with no issues.
Current Stihl and other makes dealer in town gets all exited and sells alcohol free fuel at $6+ a gallon.
What experiences have you all had?

Gravdigr 05-06-2019 01:12 PM

If you have a Casey's General Store nearby, they have no-alcohol fuel on every pump, ours does, anyway.

Our local Minit Mart has a special tank out back of the store for the no-alcohol fuel.

Ir's only about 20 cents per gallon higher, IIRC.

fargon 05-06-2019 06:22 PM

Kwik Trip premium is no alcohol.

Diaphone Jim 05-06-2019 06:24 PM

Nearby Casey's @1500 miles.
Here is an interesting discussion:

https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/...gear/index.htm

xoxoxoBruce 05-07-2019 12:01 AM

Alcohol actually makes more power than straight gasoline, with a slight drop in mileage/time per gallon.
It shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't let it sit in the tank, or more than 2 months in the can.

But you can find ethanol free online.
https://www.pure-gas.org/
https://www.buyrealgas.com/

Griff 05-07-2019 06:19 AM

I just get the ethanol free at the pump.

Gravdigr 05-07-2019 11:23 AM

Most places don't have it at all, much less at the regular pumps. Around here anyhow.

@DiaJim:

Nearest Casey's = 1500 miles. Damn, where are you Hawaii?:lol2:

Diaphone Jim 05-07-2019 11:30 AM

"It shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't let it sit in the tank, or more than 2 months in the can."
I have five cans and close to twenty tanks on equipment, many premix.
Any ideas as to how to reasonably follow your plan?
