Custom Ink for printed shirts etc. Fabulous service, great pricing, great product. Impressed. Hebe's recommendation. Always gone local before, but last year the local guys sucked.

Carruthers 06-23-2016 10:18 AM

For years, I needed a decent torch when looking after horses in the middle of winter or keeping an eye on a couple of farms when the manager was away.
A Maglite product fitted the bill admirably with its superior materials and excellent manufacture.
Most torches were fitted with similar bulbs so a Maglite's USP was its durability.
As time went on and LED torches became both brighter and smaller, Maglite failed to keep abreast of advancing technology so they fell by the wayside.

Last week I gathered up a number of torches that had, at one time or another, been scattered about between farm, house, car and stables and gave them away to someone who could put each to better use than me.
As it seems highly unlikely that I shall ever have to trudge around a darkened farm again, I just needed one reliable source of light and decided to give Maglite another chance by purchasing a 3rd generation LED model.
It has a number of modes including various power settings and a strobe function so it will do admirably to spot the creatures of the night digging up the front lawn or in the event of my car expiring at an inconvenient time.
Maximum output is 625 lumens which is more than adequate for my needs.
It's probably the wrong time of the year to buy a torch because up here at 51 45N we don't have Scandinavian levels of summer daylight, but we don't have very long nights either.
No doubt it will prove its worth as the year goes on.

Maglite ML300L

Thoroughly endorsed and recommended!

(No, I didn't go for the one with the camouflage colour scheme!)

glatt 06-23-2016 12:05 PM

That makes me want to dig out my flashlight and talk about how awesome it is. I can't remember the brand.

It's a solid metal one like a maglite, takes 3 AA batteries, and is extremely bright with a beam that can be focused or spread wide. And the thing I like the most about it is that it takes AA batteries. I already have a bunch of AA rechargeables for various electronics, so I always have bunch of AA batteries charged and ready to go.

The only downside is that sometimes it seems a little too bright. If you're out camping and you or others are trying to keep their night vision going, turning this sucker on is like lighting the place up with an arc welder.

They claim a 7 hr run time. What mAh are your batts? Are the rechargeable? L-ion? I think the current (haha) maximum MAh for a AAA is about 1000MAh rated, delivering 980MAh. Eneloop, I think.

Pen geekdom follows

I have enjoyed the different colors of the Pilot G2 gel ink pens. In recent times I was made aware that most people who give a shit about pens actually prefer something different than the G2. In particular the line of the Uniball Signo pens is favored, cos it smudges less and dries faster and stuff.

I tried them and found they were the quality item. In particular, they have a set of five which are different "combinations" of black. The "BLX" set. Blue-black is a common combination in pens, and I use that color a lot, but they also have green-black, red-black, purple-black and brown-black. They are subtle style, classy but distinctive.

Then I tried the Pilot Frixion, and I think this is my favorite. I like a dig thick line and their 0.7mm is really very nice. The ink is ERASABLE with heat, and when you use the included eraser, it generates friction on a page and heats up the ink and it disappears. Pretty cool.

The problem is, they say if you leave a document in a hot car, it will disappear. They say if you leave the pen in a hot car it will turn the ink all clear. And they say you can put a document, or a pen, in the freezer for a while to make the ink come back. But again, I like all that, cos it's interesting.

So I use the Uni-ball BLX pens for permanent stuff, and when I want to write in different shades of black, which I always do; and the Frixion for everyday stuff or when I want to make writing disappear.

There is also a non-retractable Signo in 1.0mm thickness, the UM-153 and it is all balls. But most of the time you don't want that kind of thickness. But I dig it anyway.

I got all this shit at jetpens.com where you can order the pens directly from Japan and some even have Japanese writing on them. jetpens.com is awesome. I bought pens until there was $25 of shit and so free shipping. Then I did it again because I wanted more and I wanted the same pens at home and work. It's crazy; but I do enjoy writing with them. It's like my only creative outlet at work.

Sundae 08-24-2016 10:44 AM

Best £15 I ever spent was on a second hand mattress.
All I wanted was something that would allow me to sleep, didn't smell of Diz and had never had blood vomited on it.

The one the charity had in stock happened to be a real peach.
I had to put up with the bitching and moaning of the two men who carried it up my stairs (HELLO! It's your JOB! It was on the delivery papers that I lived two flight up!) but oh my word.

That and my Cellar-bought duvet mean I can deal with anything that happens in the night. Dodgy dreams, delivery lorries in the yard (yeah, thanks Argos) fire alarms going off, humidity headaches.

Teach the kinder in school. Good mattresses don't solve mental health issues, but they sure as heck help.

Undertoad 11-17-2016 09:18 AM

Listen if you need a new mattress, don't buy it at a store, and don't buy the old style with inner springs. Buy a memory foam mattress, and buy it at Amazon.

Yeah I know you "need" to try out the mattress before you buy it. No, you don't, either. Because for one thing, you will never ever, in a million years, get any idea of what it is like to sleep on that surface by going into a store and lying on it, awake and alert, fully dressed, for 10 seconds.

And if it is a spring mattress, it will not feel exactly like that, even one year after use. So why kid yourself?

Go on Amazon, get one described as whatever you figure you might like; soft or firm, cool or hot. It will be about half the price of what you'll find in stores. The mattress arrives at your front door in a big box. You cut the box open, the mattress expands. In a few hours it's reg'lar-shaped. It's so easy. And you will like it.

glatt 11-17-2016 10:28 AM

I agree absolutely. I did extensive research a couple years ago and discovered that people who buy their mattresses untested from the internet have a higher satisfaction rate than people who go to a store and try their mattresses out and then buy them. Two reasons for this. You do your research more when you buy online so are likely to do a better job at selecting something good, and secondly, you are paying less without the pressure from sales people trying to up-sell you.

Go to sleep like the dead dot com to do some mattress research. When I did that and read tons of information about all different types of mattresses, it steered me to a latex foam mattress sold by Amazon. When I bought the mattress, I specified the softness on a scale from 1-10. I fucking love this mattress, two years later. It's like a dream, crawling into bed. It has two types of foam, a supportive thick latex foam that's like 75% of the thickness of the mattress, and a soft foam on the top that is super cushy. They alter the thickness of that soft top foam layer to give you the softness vs. support you want.

xoxoxoBruce 11-17-2016 11:17 AM

I got a three inch memory foam pad for the top of her mattress because of crippling arthritis. She said it was very comfortable and took the pressure of sore joints. The downside was because of her limited mobility, she had trouble moving around on it. Changing position, or getting in and out, were more difficult. I should think his wouldn't affect most people, though.

glatt 11-17-2016 11:40 AM

Excellent.

lumberjim 11-17-2016 01:52 PM

I got a Sleep Number Bed. It's very good.

I am extremely happy with the transdermal vitamin products from PatchMD--or at least the iron supplement, so far.

It's funny because these things are primarily advertised for people who have had bariatric surgery and thus are chronically nutrient-deficient and can't absorb extra vitamins even if they take them. But they also work great for people whose digestive tracts are just generally sensitive. I haven't tried any on my kids at all, just experimenting on myself to determine the effectiveness and quality, and the one thing I am chronically, abysmally low in is iron. Oral iron is especially tough on the system--even when I take the supposed "slow release" "plant-derived" "makes no difference" crap--and my doctor had warned me that if I can't manage to swallow enough extra pills, probably every day from now until menopause given my heavy periods, I'd have to go with IV delivery on who knows how regular of a basis.

But ha-HA! I gave the PatchMD iron patches a shot, and they work! Levels are already creeping upward within days, rather than months, and I feel good (like I do when I take a bunch of iron pills) except I'm not shitting green and cramping (like I do when I take a bunch of iron pills).

Now I'm excited to find out what other magical products they can offer me.

BigV 11-18-2016 10:39 PM

Pass on the mushy foam mattress. I have slept on such a few times. They are hard to move around in. Cushy, sure. . Pass.

In other news, I really like this little shop vac I got at goodwill recently. It sits on top of a regular five gallon bucket... Just the right size, plenty of power and capacity. And I paid just ten bucks for it.

Endorsed, wholeheartedly!

Ugh. I take it back.

The iron part worked great. But the patch also has a shit ton of Vitamin A, no idea why. While my brain started working again with proper oxygenation, my hand tremors and other mild tics soon went through the damn roof with all the Vitamin A (I'm assuming, no other iron supplements have ever affected my tremor). Side effects as bad as the disease. I can get away with occasional patches, but not the several-at-a-time-for-several-months that I need in order to escape this perpetual borderline anemia.

Meanwhile, my period just started again and I'm back to square negative three. I was at a party this evening and couldn't keep my stepson's name in my head. Kept trying to call him the name of my friend's son. Excuse me while I go toss back a bunch of iron pills and shit green for a bit.

Clodfobble 12-18-2016 06:02 PM

The "recommended daily values" are notoriously low for some vitamins. For example, in the US the RDA for Vitamin D is 400 IU. By comparison, 30 minutes in the sun will get you about 10,000 to 20,000 IU depending on the latitude. In Germany, it used to be standard practice to give all newborns an injection of 100,000 IU within the first few months of life. (They stopped because it was an East Germany practice and when the wall came down everything defaulted to what West Germany did, though there was evidence that it was a beneficial practice, especially for babies born during the winter months.)

The point is, that amount won't hurt you.

Sure it's the A and not whatever they add to make your skin absorbent? Or is it adsorbent? I can never keep it straight. Or do they add something to the vitamin mix to make them 'sorbable?

Clodfobble 12-18-2016 08:59 PM

Could be, I don't know. It's the only patch product out there so I have nothing to compare it to.

The plug in treats the backspace key as a delete-the-character-to-the-left key. Not in a text input field? Go back a page.

Clodfobble 12-26-2016 06:52 PM

Nope. Backspace never means back-a-page. Neither does the scroll wheel button, for that matter. The only thing that means go back a page is clicking the back arrow. Anyone who needs to go back so frequently that they need a special shortcut is too damn indecisive and/or wrong.
