What the hell is he playing. Look at the crossing strings from back to front.

Elspode 09-19-2009 07:59 PM

It is a custom made, one-off instrument made for him by a female luthier. Fairly amazing.

of all the pictures on my digital picture frame, this is the one people comment on the most:

No it's a shark! ;)

Yeah, it's a whale. Humpback. We get a lot of them along the eastern seaboard at this time of year. That was the first time I'd ever seen them so close though. The experience was almost spiritual in its awesomeness. It made my day...week...month even.

I went on a whalewatch on the left coast two weeks ago. I've been on two previous whalewatch trips, one out of Boston, and another out of L.A. This most recent one was from Santa Barbara. We saw blue whales and dolphins, along with some other critters.

I took this picture today while on a hike. I don't understand why it looks like this lizard has a human eye. It's kinda creepy and I like it.

Attachment 25103

Anyone fathom a guess? I didn't alter the photo to put a human eye there, and I know precious little about lizards except they're fast little buggers.

I don't know how good or neat these are. I mean, I took them with my iPhone. It isn't so much that they're great pics. But the first one is fairly self-explanatory, and the second is just a pretty tree in the same cemetary.

The grave of Charlie "Bird" Parker, legendary sax player, creator of be-bop, and junkie. It is located in Lincoln Cemetary in Kansas City. TF and I were driving right by today on the way to somewhere else, so we just stopped and visited him. I mean, how often do you get to stand above the moldering remains of a genius?

The Bird's stone looks like you could play shuffleboard on it. :mg:

Don't know what kind that is, but here's a Baja Rock Lizard. It seems a lot of lizards, except Geckos and Chameleons, have eyes like this.

The snake that bit my dog. I think she was nesting.

The last pic was a week out, you can still see the swelling on the side of his face. He is all better now.

capnhowdy 10-23-2009 06:35 AM

Lucky dog. And tough.

xoxoxoBruce 10-23-2009 09:55 AM

Lovely dog. I'm glad to know he's on the mend.

capnhowdy 10-24-2009 11:28 AM

I've always preferred the look of dead snakes over the live ones.....

ZenGum 10-24-2009 06:44 PM

I am amused by the way you're keeping her covered in the first photo. Did you yell "hands up!!!"?

Nirvana 10-24-2009 06:51 PM

Poor doggie! I did not know you had a heeler Merc!

capnhowdy 10-25-2009 07:59 AM

...or is that a cattle dog?

wolf 10-25-2009 08:04 AM

Glad your dog is okay! Snake looks like she might make a nice belt. What kind is it (is that a rattle on the end?)?

capnhowdy 10-25-2009 08:14 AM

I think that's what we call a timber rattler. But then, what do I know? I'm just a dumbass Marine.

TheMercenary 10-25-2009 11:09 AM

Eastern Diamondback. It had 8 rattles. I would have skinned it but was out of time to deal with it and I was off to work for the next two days at the time. I know the wife was not really interested in dealing with it and she wouldn't let me keep it in the freezer, so I had to trash it with great reluctance.

Yea, we thought we would down size after the Ridgebacks. Now we miss having the Ridgebacks again. He is a good additon to the pack but he is a handful. I am teaching him to be a frisbee dog.

but he is a handful.

That is probably an understatement! I started enjoying my cattle dogs more when they turned 3-4 after they have calmed a bit. I really like the Belgian Sheepdog that just showed up here. Smart, non destructive, and easy to train. Cattle dogs are a bit pig-headed.

Ugggg... I am learning about their pig-headedness first hand. He is to smart for his own good. I am still trying to channel some of his energy.

I took this picture Sunday morning. I was staying here, visiting a friend with my friend. This area of Ohio is beautiful!

ZenGum 10-26-2009 05:58 PM

Wow. I love the way they built their house in the shape of a giant Quaker hat.

Shawnee123 10-26-2009 06:01 PM

The sunbeams are awesome. And the dew on the grass. Really the whole picture.

Shawnee123 10-28-2009 03:20 PM

Thanks guys.

The place was so pretty. The picture is better without the needed downsizing. I'm certainly no photographer, but I liked it.

I took pictures of the calf that lives there, Abby, too. She and I became fast friends. I would've taken her home as a pet but she wouldn't fit in my little car.
