11/24/2004: Billboard coverup

Can you feel the ass of the culture tightening? In this case it's in Israel, where a group of ultra-Orthodox Jews demanded that Sarah Jessica Parker's dress should be a little less revealing.

full story

jaguar  Wednesday Nov 24 01:43 PM

.............Lucky she wasn't showing any ankle or they really would have let her have it.

Troubleshooter  Wednesday Nov 24 03:22 PM

Retards...

SteveDallas  Wednesday Nov 24 03:32 PM

Soon we'll be back to public floggings as punishment for using naughty words.

Slothboy  Wednesday Nov 24 04:29 PM

Well, come on. It's Israel for crying out loud, not Los Angeles. It was bad research to assume they would find that sort of marketing acceptable in the first place.

I would agree that in the US the pendulum is swinging back to "tight ass" land, but Israel founded the Tight Ass Nation in the first place.

At least they didn't burn the billboard to the ground.

capnhowdy  Wednesday Nov 24 04:30 PM

It appears to me that not only did they change her clothing, they changed her skin tone to be more "culturally acceptable".
The company name is Unilever. Maybe I really AM twisted. Sounds like a sex toy to me.

Troubleshooter  Wednesday Nov 24 04:34 PM

Is it just me or is her nose a little bigger as well?

Wombat  Wednesday Nov 24 04:42 PM

The apparent change in skin tone is probably just caused by different light giving different exposure (no pun intended). And do you really think her nose could get any bigger?

xoxoxoBruce  Wednesday Nov 24 09:46 PM

Chanting....Burka for Bradshaw...Burka for Bradshaw...Burka for Bradshaw.

gregle  Thursday Nov 25 08:14 AM

"Lucky she wasn't showing any ankle or they really would have let her have it."

"Retards."

Come now. Different cultures have different standards, for any number of cultural, religious and social reasons.

Over here in the UK we were laughing our arses off at the (to us) ludicrous furore that erupted over Janet Jackson's infamous 'nipple slip' at the Superbowl – "Quick Marjorie! Cover the children's eyes before they're corrupted forever and damned to an eternity in the fiery pit!"

By the same token, billboards and TV ads for shower/bath products across Europe regularly show women's breasts and nobody blinks – it's normal.

The quoted kneejerk reactions above are ill-thought-out and emit a slightly unpleasant whiff of xenophobia. Don't sneer at what you don't understand.

Clodfobble  Thursday Nov 25 10:25 AM

Wow, the UK's stereotypical "American" name is Marjorie?

gregle  Thursday Nov 25 01:14 PM

Not really - just the first thing that popped into my head, for some bizarre reason. You get my (slightly pompous) point though, surely?

Clodfobble  Thursday Nov 25 01:33 PM

Oh yes, I got the overall point. I was just amused at the name choice. Here in the U.S. (or at least down south), the everyman Brit would be named Jeeves, or Nigel, or Niles.

Cyber Wolf  Thursday Nov 25 08:39 PM

Someone quoted on WTOP that the coverup was done because it's WINTER now so she wouldn't be showing as much skin.

Har.

York  Friday Nov 26 12:41 PM

than they forgot the cap and gloves...

Er....you might want to reconsider some of your assumptions about Israel, seriously, tel aviv is as modern and open (socially) as any other big western city and most of the country is the same.

Brown Thrasher  Friday Nov 26 03:17 PM

Those are the two most terrible pictures of Sally Jessica Parker, I have ever seen. They should have covered her face as well...

Everything has a reason. That doesn't mean that it is a good reason.

As did I, I've done enough travelling to realize that stupid knows know bounds.

That just shows that they can't be wrong all of the time.

1) Definitely not kneejerk;
2) thoroughly thought out, plenty of practice cuts down on the cycle time;
3) not xenophobic, see my travel note above;
4) don't berate the understanding of someone you lack knowldge of.

jaguar  Saturday Nov 27 11:19 AM

Sorry gregle but you're not making too much sense, if you found the superbowl incident hilarious why do you think we should view this in solemn silence and slowly try and comprehend which ever bunch of fundies are behind this one? They're both silly incidents that are not good reflections on their respective societies nor are they that representative of the population in general and certainly doesn't fit my experiences with Israelis. In short, what is is you find has 'wiffs of xenophobia' about my comment.

xoxoxoBruce  Sunday Nov 28 03:19 AM

I think Isreal has more nude or at least topless beaches than the US does. Either that or the people sending pics to Project Voyeur & VoyeurWeb are lying.

CharlieG  Monday Nov 29 07:56 AM

Folks, it's the Mid-East. By Middle Eastern standards they are NOT tight assed bastards - they aren't making the women wear burkas, right?

Hate to be Non PC - but lets thing of this - we have 2 major religions still based in the Middle East (Catholicism has been based in Rome _OR_ congregationalist for a LONG time) - both have a LOT in common - in fact, if you remove religion, it would be hard to tell an Arab from an Israeli

Naw, the Israelis carry Galilis and Uzis whereas the Arabs favor AKs.

or German-made H&K MP5's and PDW's. How's that for irony?

xoxoxoBruce  Tuesday Nov 30 09:35 PM

Which side carry the German guns? Both?

wolf  Wednesday Dec 1 01:34 AM

Here's a nice overview of the Israeli Special Forces weapons.

jaguar  Wednesday Dec 1 03:06 AM

I don't see any H&K goodies in there..
